Absolutely wonderful such a calming voice of hope and love.
Pity the world has changed so much and there is so much much difficulties that we seem to create for ourselves.
Give me back those days of calm and safety that I seemed to have when I was young and free.

Thanks Mike! This really was the last of the classic English Ballads. Published in 1938, it was also recorded by Walter Glynne, John McCormack, John McHugh, Peter Dawson, Gracie Fields and Webster Booth. It has retained its popularity over the years, with more recent recordings by Kenneth McKellar, Stuart Burrows, Thomas Allen and Bryn Terfel among many others.
The composer, Alan Murray, had appeared on one of Richard Tauber's wartime broadcasts, and so admired Tauber's singing of this song that he wrote another especially for him: My heart is in Vienna Still' which Tauber also recorded.

Thank you, just beautiful. I was brought up with Richard Tauber playing in the background. My Dad loved him and it brings back fond memories. He's been dead for 45 years and I am 76 but this takes me back to those happy childhood days. 🩵

TY Mike for the upload, Richard Tauber, is one of my favourite singers. A beautifully tender version of this classic. Simple, but so poignant lyrics which always brings tears to my eyes.

Recorded on 10 May 1940--the day when the Wehrmacht started the attack on France and the Benelux countries and occupied them within weeks ... So much beauty here and so much suffering there.

If such trivia is within Dan O'Hara's scholarly remit, my grandmother adopted the Tauber's Wire-haired Fox Terrier, Topsy, when the couple returned to London after evacuating to her Buckinghamshire village. I have a photo of me with the dog.
