Strange that when they speak of "treasure hunters", they show a picture of a diver around a wreck that certainly CANNOT be Titanic, since she rests in waters over 12, 000 ft deep where no human diver is capable of going in just a wetsuit.

As a Titanic nerd. Ballard's wreck photographs taken during his dives in 1985 and 1986 are some of the most amazing first images of the ship, showing its condition along with artifacts including floor tiles, leaded glass windows from the 1st Class Dining Room, and artifacts from the 1st Class Smoke Room.

Just because it wasn't covered, the USS Thresher was eventually determined to have suffered a propulsion failure (by one of several theorized mechanisms) and fell prey to an edge case design flaw in their ballast tanks. Blowing them (depressurizing the air to make the ship buoyant) in a specific set of conditions would cause ice to form in the pipes and block further flow. Without thrust, the submarine simply sank far too deep and imploded so violently that Ballard could only retrieve a foot long piece of mangled piping. They had figured out the icing issue from the Thresher's sister ship having the same issue in testing, and it was fitted with a fix.

The USS Scorpion also sank and imploded, but is much more intact and is the submarine the images in the video show. Unfortunately, nobody ever really figured out what sank the Scorpion, but the images did serve to knock a couple of the worse theories off the board. Both were most definitely accidents, submarines with their capabilities were still bleeding-edge technology.

I was a US submariner. I was taught about the Thrasher and Scorpion. I had to learn how to avoid that tragedy. Men died and we need to avoid that.

She has to be one of the prettiest Hamburglars I've ever seen. Old enough Muricans will know who I'm talking about. I love me some DARKDOCS. Watch that channel all the time.

I think Ballard also found the Bismarck.

I consider myself something of a Titanic-o-phile. I've always been fascinated by the whole story and everything that led to the sinking. I always wished James Cameron's movie would have gone into more detail about all the issues that caused the sinking and all of the controversies that arose afterwards instead of turning into a fictional love story set amongst a real historical event. And I've always considered Robert Ballard to be something of a hero. It's interesting that this ship continues to tell stories. So when I heard Ballard admit a couple of years ago that the discovery had actually been part of a secret U.S. Navy mission, I guess I wasn't really surprised. Someone should make a movie about the mission! This is the first I've heard of the British discovering the Titanic wreckage first. I think that's just someone blowing smoke out of a certain part of their body.

10:00 That piece of the ship’s hull, known as the “Big Piece, ” is on display at the Luxor in Las Vegas. It’s pretty amazing to see in person and the exhibit is worth the price of admission just to see it IMO.

2:04 I believe that was supposed to be the bathtub that the captain used. I remember watching a video recently showing the recent rapid deterioration of the Titanic. They showed that picture of when they first discovered that bathtub area, and then showed a recent picture of it now being gone. The Titanic will all be reduced to nothing within a few decades due to the natural deteriorating effects that salt water has on metal, sadly.

I have a long-standing fascination with the Titanic and the Andrea Doria - both from the human perspective and the technology surrounding their losses, discovery, and subsequent exploration. I love your content. Thanks for introducing me to this sub-plot.

My Grampa used to be an engineer and built ships for the Navy. He worked at the same shipyard where the Thresher was built, and the first year my grandparents were married, he was away during thanksgiving on a submarine test ride, the first one ever done after the thresher accident😳

Love the history of Titanic! I’d highly recommend Titanic: Honor and Glory, Titanic University, and Titanic Animations if you want to see interesting factual videos on the ship :)

Love the Titanic story...I actually have an original New York Times newspaper dated April 19, 2012...one of my precious gems in my collection...the stories in it are interviews of lots of passengers...one boy said that "He seen the Captain on the deck, he lifted a pistole up to his head and then fell down"...very sad stories in it

For those of you wondering the video is from Dark Docs, it's an off shoot of the original series Dark 5

In 1977, I got a book for my tenth birthday from my Grandmother. It was a first-edition copy of "The Sinking of the Titanic, " which was printed in 1912. I still have that book, and another copy of a later printing, which I've read quite a few times over the years; I was fascinated by the story, and was ecstatic when Robert Ballard found the wreck. In 2005, I was offered a seat on a special submarine designed to go down to the wreck; it carried only three people. Because of the work I was doing for the Department of Defense, and because the submersible was being launched from a Russian-flagged vessel (hell, James Cameron was supposed to be the other passenger), I couldn't get permission from the DOD, the State Department, OR the National intelligence agencies. It's my one regret...never going down to pay my respects.

In the early 90's I met Dr. Bob Ballard when he was making a presentation to my Navy bosses. This presentation was about his exploration in the "Iron Bottom Sound", a battle ground at sea in the south Pacific Ocean. He was fascinating to listen to.

I can't believe that UK had satellite info on the Titanic before 1985!! Not sure there were satellites capable of doing this under water search either.

Courtney, Natioinal Geographic made a detailed hour long documentary on Ballard's search for the Titanic, and had a long article in their Journal. You might enjoy them. They didn't say much about the Navy, but it was obvious that some of the technology had been developed by the Navy. That does not mean a military connection to the mission, so it was an effective cover story. The Navy funds a lot of oceanogrphic research, particularly of how sound travels through the ocean, and what kind of sounds naturally occur in the ocean. It is valuable information for detecting submarines.
