Khabib was the NAGA 2012 ADCC Rules No-Gi Expert Welterweight Champion

95% of BJJ schools only focus on sport BJJ and mostly teach techniques that’ll never work in a real fight. Also, you’ll never learn real takedowns, basic strikes and strike defense. ADCC rules used to cater to BJJ athletes (don’t know about now). Sport Sambo has a rule set while Combat Sambo is a military style that’s designed for real life combat. If Fedor didn’t change your perception on the usefulness of Combat Sambo then by this time Khabib should’ve opened your eyes….

I think a wrestling-oriented (takedowns and top control) style of BJJ is best for MMA. Your first priority when you end up on your back should be standing up, second should be getting a sweep, and third should be getting a submission. Too many BJJ practitioners have the opposite mindset and prefer to try to submit people from their guard, but that leaves you susceptible to ground and pound in the time it takes you to set up a submission.

A lot of BJJ schools don't teach leg/foot locks to white and maybe blue belts because of the risk of really damaging guys because of the precision needed to successfully do leg/foot locks. I trained at the original Gracie Academy in Torrance for two years and Rener and Ryron were our instructors. Yes, we trained for self defense in the "streets." Also, you are correct, they teach the perfection of the fundamental aspects of JJ and Rener was awesome at explaining this. None of this fancy 10th Planet north monkey triangle moves or whatever. Glad to see a video that is accurate about the Gracies.

Yoo, I've been saying that myself after coming from some TMA's into MMA. Eventually everything just starts to blend and you get "striking skills" and "grappling skills" rather than the specific arts you might've initially started with.

I learn so much from you... thanks for not assuming everyone who watches knows it all.

How many BJJ guys enter Judo competitions and win? Rule sets dictate how someone competes and ultimately dictates how people train if their main focus is competing. If Naga gave a throw suddenly 4 or 5 points, I bet you’d see way more Judo guys win. If you let guys get elbowed in the back of the head in MMA Khabids tactics would’ve have worked as well. Rules dictate training.

How many JJ guys won Sambo tournaments or Judo Grand slams? Not even one ;)
I'm just stating facts using the same analogy

Marcelo Garcia submitted Ben Askren countless times in a 5 minute roll. Unbelievable. When you switch to MMA however. Askren crushes Marcelo just a often. Cant compare the two.

Relson is a self defense heavy Gracie too. Sad he doesn't get a shout

The difference is a standup strategy situated around takedowns vs distance control and catch as can vs positional dominance.

Thank you so much for your perspective. I’m only a blue belt and I have no interest in all the new bear n bolo and other techniques. I like Rickson, Kron, Ralph, and Rener Gracie style of simplicity and training fewer techniques and reacher and elite level with them. But like you said it depends on your use for jiujitsu as I’m more focused on self defense and even once I start competing I will still stick to the basics.
