I don't like it when math educators call things "tricks" -- as if there is no mathematical logic behind what they are doing. What you're basically doing is converting each of the fractions, such that they have the same denomination. Whatever you have to multiply the denominator by is what you have to multiply the numerator by (in order to keep the fraction equivalent). In essence, you're changing the way the factions look by multiplying them by 1/1.
