Did you know that nearly 14.5 million seniors live alone in the U.S., and over 25% face the risk of malnutrition? Imagine a brutal winter storm hits, isolating our elderly loved ones.

Are they prepared? Are you? When severe weather strikes, power outages and isolation can turn deadly. It’s crucial to have a robust stockpile of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare foods to sustain them for at least a month.

As a nurse I also recommend Over The Counter (OTC) meds like tylenol, ibuprofen, laxatives, anti-diarrheals, potassium iodide (for radiation exposure), antihistamine (topical and oral), topical steroids, some bulk saline solution (even if you dont wear contacts it can be used to irrigate wounds), topical antiseptic, sun screen, lip balm (with SPF). The only problem about doing this is that you have to periodically check the expiration dates. But if the OTC med is past expiration you can still use it, it just wont be at full strength. There are very few medications that become harmful to use if they are past expiration and they are typically the prescription meds, mainly certain antibiotics and nitroglycerin. The only OTC meds to be mindful of are eye drops and saline because is concerns over sterility.
