L.H.S = x^2 + 4x - 5
= (-1)^2 + 4 (-1) -5
= 1 - 4 - 5
= 1 - 9
= -8
L.H.S is not equal to 0
Therefore, x=-1 is not the root of given equation.

Complete square method
x² + x = 20
Third term= (b/2)²= (1/2)²=1/4
Adding 1/4 on both sides
x² + x + 1/4 = 20 + 1/4
[ x+ 1/2]² = [20+1/4]
[x+1/2]² = [80+1/4]=81/4
Taking square root
x+1/2 = ±9/4
x= ±9/2 - 1/2
x= 9/2 - 1/2 or x= -9/2 - 1/2
x = 8/3 or x = -10/2
x = 4 or x = -5
