What are the Standard Code of Ethics for Professional Interpreters?

Responsibility of Interpreters
• Translate information as accurately as possible
• Respect the confidentiality of all parties involved
• Conduct themselves in a professional manner

You should only work with a professional translation/interpretation services provider that upholds ethical guidelines, including requirements such as:

Accuracy
To be faithful in the rendering of the source language. They will not omit or add anything.

Cultural Sensitivity
To respect differences in culture and be culturally sensitive to the individuals or groups they serve.

Confidentiality
To treat any information they obtain or receive through assignments as confidential.

Disclosure
To never discuss, offer opinions, or publically disclose information obtained.

Proficiency
To meet a minimum proficiency set, exhibiting experience and competency in the art of interpretation, and holding memberships in industry-relevant professional associations.

Compensation
To never accept or charge additional money, bonuses, compensation, or favors from the client for personal or private gain.

Non-Discrimination and Conflict of Interest
To remain completely neutral and unbiased in all situations.
If there is any conflict of interest that may compromise their professionalism they must disclose it immediately.

Professional Demeanor
To serve professionally and dress and act appropriately.
