Also, there are literally bots that scan tweets for replies along the lines of "I really wish this was on a t-shirt" or some variation of it, then take the image of the original tweet put it on a generic low-quality t-shirt, and sell it on some website in mass. or the bots can just follow specific artists and do the same thing to any art they post, so lower-quality images are a good deterrent for them

As someone who's had their fanart scraped and resold, it's incredibly demoralizing when it happens.
When it's fanart, even if you WANT to make it into merch, creators often will prefer to use more reputable services where, if they attempt to sell it, they'll typically get DMCA'd by the IP owner (and merch of another's IP is iffy territory anyway). Meanwhile resellers also often use shady services that are hard to litigate.

Ever since I started placing watermarks on my artwork, I got complains and also comment like "Stop gate keeping" and "This is why A.I. will replace you."

So to stop these nonsense I stop posting online since I already got regular clients.

>be internet artist
>posts art
>art gets stolen into shitty sticker and print within 1.5*10^-6 picoseconds then gets resold on Aliexpress
>500 different AI learns how to make the exact picture with your artstyle within the next business day

It's one thing to make it for yourself it's another thing that just take her stuff and then do high quality consistent production with her work.

Art isn’t just a product to be bought and sold it is an expression of self no matter what it may be and no matter how insignificant it may seem i totally get where she’s coming from

Also if she is drawing art to sell there are a lot of things you need to consider when drawing the piece that you dont have to think as in depth about if you intend to upload to social media. Designing art for t shirts vs posters vs blankets; etc all require special care and attention to certain settings and colors.

one day you post some cute art on twitter

the next day, it becomes a t-shirt at some unknown filipino weeb store

Yeah.

I generally asked for FuwaMoco stuff for Christmas and I got a nice soft blanket….. I at some point realized I recognized the artwork because it was retweeted by FUWAMOCO on X at some point (it was originally drawn and put on X by ICOMOCHI who if I remember correctly designed their models and draws them a lot).

So yes every piece of artwork you upload has a chance of being made into merch by someone.

It's not about the money, it's about the WAH.

Understandable and at the same time sad. When I saw the illustration she posted on Twitter I immediately downloaded it and used it as my lock screen wp. But sadly this kind of art stealing practices will never go away, heck now a days it's so easy to upscale an image that I don't think those people mind that she's not uploading a higher res image.

As an illustrator who got my own artwork stolen and sold on online platforms, I can totally understand the frustration. Art thief really do not care, you can put watermark, and upload as low res, there are still some of them decide to steal it and make it into some kind of products. And now there are also AI, which learn all our art style.
The time of posting artwork just for the community and fun is long gone.

An artist's fame can sometimes bring along shady people who only see is their greed

This is most reason why most japanese artist ive seen quit posting art, stuff like people reposting their work and even worse doing it for profit make them give up trying to share their work sadly.

When was the last time you did something for the pure joy of it and not worry at the same time about whether you're wasting time that could be spent hustling to pay rent or bills? This world is bleak.

Lower resolution helps with taking less time to load on people's feed. So that's a bonus

As someone who gets mad really easily when setting a desktop background and seeing the low quality, this is sad, but completely understandable, there are hella bots nowdays in twitter that scrape art and automatically use it for malicious purposes

One of the reasons I don't post my art at all tbh. I'm at a skill level where people will steal it.
