Planting Tulips in a Crate for Spring Cut Flowers

I am experimenting with some extra tulip bulbs that I have and planting them in a crate, in hopes that I will be able to use them in my spring market bouquets for my cut flower business!

Lol, I did the same thing a month ago. Due to lack of time and cold weather upon me, I chose to do this. The only difference being two large pots instead of a crate and a chicken wire over them to prevent the critters from digging the bulbs out.

Excited to see how this turns out! I am wondering if I could leave some bulbs in the fridge, then plant up as you did maybe 4-6 weeks before I need them to bloom? I am wondering if that would help stagger bloom times so I have blooms available through easter, mothers day, etc. without having to worry so much about the weather cooperating.

hi Christine, where I live its summer now. I'm starting some dahliascfrom seeds. but i believe i waited for too long and when I transplant the little seedling out to my flower beds, they scorch :( i know people that grow dahlias around here don't need to dig them up for winter. I'll keep trying

Hi! Can you tell us how it went? Just finishing my tulip season and looking for this option for next year. Try to find an option to have tulip a bit sooner and to find a way to avoid the 7 years rotation when you plant in trenches. Thank you!
