Tulip planting for cut flowers in zone 8b, Scotland.

After a mild autumn the temperatures are now going down and it's time to get the tulips planted. This year I am aiming to get 3700 planted and a good mixture of early, mid and late flowering varieties. I will show you how I mix tulip planting in beds outside with tulip planting in crates and pots. This helps me to have a succession of flowers for 6 weeks over the spring in April and May.

I've only been able to put my tulips in pots so far but do plan to try putting some in wire cages partly buried in the bed. So the top of the fencing is out and protects from rabbits and I can drape some fine black (almost invisible) netting over top to keep hares away. They like to nibble everything! I want to try this with a few varieties that are supposed to be ok for perennial flowers. But alas, the weather has been terrible so I finally got the rest planted today and had to put them in pots.

I'm leaving my pots outside in all weather but saw a video where the guy mentioned that if the pots get frozen ice in the bottom then they won't drain well and tulips hate that. That made me wonder but I have nowhere else to put them. With that horrible cold spell we had (in the Borders) one of my pots has split! Sigh. Have you had any trouble with pots getting too saturated? Frozen?
