Study after study shows that Canada's health-care system is being outperformed by other OECD countries that also provide universal coverage. As part of a joint five-part series produced by the National Post and The Hub, we profile three countries that Canada can learn from and offer practical tips for reform.

The problems plaguing the healthcare system were rearing their heads when I first became part of the system in a professional capacity in the early 90s. 30 years and they've accomplished nothing,

Canada needs health care reform, but I worry that the result of the reform will be politicalized and eventually add huge burden on working middle-class.

My second home Taiwan also has a single payer system, with a blend of private and public healthcare. Yeah i have to pay for insurance but with a reduced tax rate of 20% income from 50, 000 to 100, 000 CAD which almost no one makes in Taiwan and no provincial tax, 1/3 the cost of living for rent, food and electricity as canada. It's not a problem. also it takes me 2 months to schedule an ultrasound in BC for a shoulder injury, in Taiwan...48 hours.

Canada's system is a pathetic joke. and anyone who thinks we have the "Best system in the world." is ignorant beyond belief.

Incompetent government is the reason. It’s not the damaging results of a pandemic but lack of government action and planning 😮

Great video National Post. It's great to see a news organization show how other countries that are kicking butt with healthcare are doing things differently. I think there's tremendous arrogance here in Canada and down south in that we stubbornly cling to the ways we've always done things. There's tons of examples of excellent healthcare in other countries and there's nothing wrong in looking to them for guidance. More of this on our other issues like excessive car dependency and urban sprawl would be great. Ontario's solution on traffic is so incredibly narrow minded: "just widen the highway." No, that doesn't work. Elder care is another example of something that Canada is failing at and needs to look to Belgium for guidance.

Decolonizing canada also means no longer having a modern health care system. Enjoy your reconciliation.

The Netherlands, Japan, UK . . . all are geographically tiny in comparison to Canada.

A much better comparison would be a geographically large federal country with a small population, like Australia.

Australia ranks 11th in the world index of healthcare innovation with an overall score of 48.38. Canada ranks 17th . . . but our score is 47.05. That is not a big swing.

Digitizing efforts in Canada were a boondoggle. Ontario's EHeal ended in a billion dollar scandal where doctors continue to use fax machines, paper files and hospitals internally keep separate patient records in each department on PC running Windows XP. When the taxpayer iso the hook there is no incentive to improve.

There are better alternatives to the way our present health care is delivered. We need to encourage our politicians to think out of the box looking for new ways to effectively deliver healthcare solutions.

Why are you comparing healthcare comes to cost as a percentage of GDP instead of the actual cost per person? What a silly way to consider how we use our funds. If our GDP to be cut in half due to some sort of economic problems it doesn't mean that we're necessarily paying double for healthcare because of problems with our healthcare system.

Per capita is not perfect either due to age and other health factors. But it's much better than the number that you were using.

What would be nice is some actual in-depth reporting and coherent plan and policy to go forward.

It's not as easy that's the short infographic but it's actually helpful and useful to Conservatives and other Canadians when it comes to telling our politicians what we want.

These don’t go far enough. Equity doesn’t work. I personally like the idea of multiple options but dislike the subsidy for it through taxation. Let’s just go for the US system but with appropriate controls on the insurance companies

Ive never understood how adding an extra cost i.e. profits, actually fixes any underfunded service.

You could always take the funding out of political hands if thats the concern. Tie healthcare funding to inflation and demographics.

Also everything Ive read and experience about healthcare seems to point to a lack of staff. Why not make the working conditions reasonable (it doesn't have to be like a coal mine in the 1800's), make it pay well and make it easier to get training.

If this those are the problem (staffing and funding) why do we need to add insurance companies?
