The SECRET Aeroplan Points Transfer Ratio

Показать описание

It's widely known that Amex MR points can be transferred to airline programs at a 1:1 ratio, while Amex MR Select points cannot, and are limited to hotel partners.

But did you know there's a hidden opportunity to convert MR Select points into Aeroplan points at a favourable ratio?

Right now, Air Canada has a flexible booking and cancellation policy that lets you voluntarily refund any Air Canada ticket into Aeroplan points with a 65% bonus. At the same time, the Amex Fixed Points Travel reward chart allows you to book round-trip flights at a fixed value of up to 2 cents per point.

Combine the two together, and interesting things happen. Let's talk about those interesting things.

I was done exactly same as your suggestions on early Feb.
I have opted to convert air fare to Aeroplan 21, 980.pts.(By cancell purchased YUL~TPE one way economic.)in the 2weeks.
Also I got the fee refund(By cancell redeemed TPE~IST~YUL one way business.) on next day.
In the meantime I bought Aeroplan 4, 800.pts. with $90+tax (By promotion limit offer).within 72 Hrs.

Is this still true? Any links references on this 65% bonus refund policy?

Hey Ricky, Bonvoy is now offering a 30% bonus on MR-S points conversion, which gives an effective ratio of 1 MR-S to 0.65 AP during the month of June (correct me if my math is not right), so it sounds like this backdoor channel in this video is still a better option, since it is giving an effective ratio of 1 MR-S to 1.08 AP.

So my question is, what is the best way to do this? Buy multiple $300 shorthaul tickets using increments of 15k MR-S and then email Amex to refund them all? Or should you purchase 1 ticket at a time, and do it that way?

Thanks, appreciate all your hard work!

Awesome little workaround to max the value of these MRS that would other wise transfer the usual way which often is mediocre..

At this moment, is it better to have AMEX points or would you recommend that I transfer my AMEX points into Aeroplan points? What are each of the points worth? What's the best bang for the buck?

Amazing. I'm going to see if i can liquidate these BMO points that I am not using the same way for that 65% bonus. Will let you know how it goes!

Hey Ricky, amazing video. I see you have provided the example of a short haul, i.e. 15k MR Select points for a $300 fare. Does the value go down if I were to select for a Toronto - Vancouver route, in which case I understand I would have to use more points? I wanted to try this out, as I am in no super rush to travel at this time.

I’ve been collecting Avion points for years and want to do Aeroplan instead. Would your tip for using MR select points to purchase a ticket then cancel and have them converted into aeroplan points work with the same with Avion?

Hey Ricky, I see the sentiment that MR-S points are more mediocre than MR points because they don’t convert 1:1 to Aeroplan and have to go through hotel points programs to get there. But with Cobalt card 5 points per dollar on food/groceries > Marriott Bonvoy > Aeroplan (with 60K point transfer bonus) you effectively get 2.5 Aeroplan points earned per dollar spent. While the current hidden conversion ratio you outline is better, the Cobalt > Bonvoy > AP route still appears as one of the better points earning rates per dollar spent on a credit card. Or am I doing the math wrong?

Damn, if I had only known about this before, I wouldn't have transferred my MR-S to Bonvoy. But I think at the time there wasn't the cancellation to AP with bonus.

Just got the Amex cobalt card. I can spend 3k and try to convert 15, 000 MR select points or it will take me 12 months to get the full 45, 000 points. By then the this conversion trick would be gone. It’s advantageous for people who have MR select points already.
