Vintage Vlog: Getting Graphic with Isabel Greenberg

I could easily have just recorded a normal vlog where I wax lyrical about how beautiful and heart-warming The One Hundred Nights of Hero is but where's the fun in that?! Far better to go to Isabel Greenberg's house and chat about our favourite graphic novels and THEN wax lyrical about her book. Enjoy.

Books mentioned:
Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris: Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry by Leanne Shapton

The One Hundred Nights of Hero

From the author who brought you The Encyclopedia of Early Earth comes another Epic Tale of Derring-Do.

Prepare to be dazzled once more by the overwhelming power of stories and see Love prevail in the face of Terrible Adversity!

You will read of betrayal, loyalty, madness, bad husbands, lovers both faithful and unfaithful, wise old crones, moons who come out of the sky, musical instruments that won’t stay quiet, friends and brothers and fathers and mothers and above all, many, many sisters.

I am a big fan of Isabel Greenberg, as you might have guessed, so this was great. I love the Shapton book, it's wonderful. I have Chris Ware's Building Stories but I've never dared open it. I need to read Kate Beaton it seems and Here sounds amazing.

I've only "discovered" graphic novels recently. I used to look down on them, thinking manga, superhero, boys' comics. I love painting, graphic art, street art etc, so discovering graphic novels, which seem to be so diverse in narrative and, of course, style/design, has been quite riveting. So I'm happy to say I've totally embraced the graphic novel genre. I haven't read any of Isabel's novels, they look amazing.

Oh that cover is beautiful! I loved the other video too showing Isabel drawing and talking about her process. I'm off to watch the Kate Beaton video now as I read Hark! A Vagrant earlier in the year and loved it

Really enjoyed this. I've not read The Encyclopedia of Early Earth yet, even though I've heard such wonderful things about it. I just finished Alison Bechdel's two graphic memoirs. I feel like they were works that needed to be in graphic form. It made the reading experience so much more evocative (for me at least). Like I felt like I was there with her, as a child and in college. And it also made me bring my own experiences to the whole thing, like it made me tie her experiences to my own or something.

I've been eagerly awaiting One Hundred Nights of Hero ever since I finished Encyclopedia of Early Earth, such beautiful artwork and some of the best story telling I've seen in a graphic novel. Very interesting so see her process in the home visit and to see where some of her inspirations come from :)

I'd like to go into the hat please. Really enjoyed the storytelling themes of her first book and I like the way she uses colour in her art, so looking forward to checking this one out.

This is super interesting, I have only read a few graphic novels in my life, including Persepolis and a couple other things. But I am getting more and more interested.

I loved The Encyclopaedia of Early Earth and would love to win a copy of this one.

I'd love to win a copy. I'm using graphic novels as a way of getting my husband to read more- he usually sticks to just history or cookery books. Want to widen his horizons xx

I have just begun a career as a bookseller. Therefore, I need more books and more literary knowledge. Do you see how I must have these books?? Mwahaha!
