Learn how to Timber Frame with the Shelter Institute
Now on the timber frame barn with this twisted timber, we need to be sure to keep the boring machine in line, or level, with the plumb lines on the ends of the timber. This post is a challenge, but it is coming along. Thanks for coming along on my journey!

The photo ending reviews are really useful Tim. When you use your boring machine and Jim only uses a chisel, you really leave Jim behind in you shavings!

Love watching the hand tools in action. Nice job on explaining how to get true mortises, etc by plumbing the beam and leveling the boring machine.

Hi. Boy do you have great videos of this project. I sure enjoy all of them and looks like a lot of fun. One question though about square rule vs snapping lines down the centers of the beams. Once you start snapping lines and creating those cross hairs at each end of the beam does that mean you need to do that method for all the beams and not use the "square rule" method at all? I would think it might get confusing to use both methods, correct?

I enjoyed watching and listening to your explanation of line rule layout. I plan on using this method in my next few timber frames but knowing you are already finished with this frame I'm interested to hear what you experienced... Playing this out in my head, while all the joinery is square, the outer surfaces would not be, right? Not only would the outer surfaces not square to the building but not square to one another either??  I'm imagining this is a post (as you are doing in this video) and then I imagining putting up exterior siding for a barn or especially the internal cladding for say a house, that would likely be horizontal... wouldn't they lay up against all the "un-square" outer surfaces with only one corner touching? I just can't imagine the cladding or siding laying flat against the post except in the middle where you leveled it. Am I right or did you experience something different? I've been enjoying your videos for quite a while now, thanks for sharing!. Darrell

Amazing work! Looking to get started on my own pretty soon just getting some things together first. Where did you find the drill bit for your boring machine? Thank you

Are all your Timbers are preseason or are you working with Greenwood?

This is ok only if your level is precise. Levels get dropped all the time and even new levels can be out. Depending on how precise the job is you should get used to checking your level..never assume that it's true.
