That doesn't activate the bell. That is the pediatric diaphragm. Littman classic III and cardiology IV have tunable diaphragm on both sides, firm pressure activates diaphragm for higher frequency sounds (S1S2, lung, and bowel sounds) lighter pressure activates the bell for lower frequency (murmurs). If you want your Littmann to have a traditional open bell (ideal for identification of murmurs) you have to take the pediatric diaphragm off and place the ring (which should come with your stethoscope) around the now open bell. But that is how you activate the bell.

An advise from many years of practice? Take off the diaphragm from the bell. Nothing, nothing beats, the open bell directly on the skin. 👍
