Nice job. I like to back prime, prime the cut ends, and then caulk the joint before I butt the pieces together. It will last longer and resist cupping, since the whole board will be sealed, not just the outside face.

To mark the centers of the rafters, just use a piece of 1" masking tape. Easy to see and no marks to remove from the drip edge later on.

Gotta go replace these boards on my grandma's super old house tomorrow. Thank you for the tips! I appreciate it and I know she will too when she gets to look at her new non-rotten boards.

Good tip. Paint the ends of your fascia board before installation. Helps seal and create longevity. Nice video and thank you for posting.

Paint the fascia before you nail it on. Including the ends.

The fascias don't HAVE to butt at a rafter, a backer piece of lumber can be screwed to the fascia that stays and the new one can be screwed/nailed to that, though I would make the backer piece as long as possible and space each board's screws out as far as possible. The only necessary reason for cutting back the fascia that stays is if it's end is messed up, which yours was.

Prolly already mentioned, but it pays to go ahead and prime the board first. You can’t paint the part under the flashing or the other side. Not enough to prevent rot.

I was looking for a South Florida specific fascia board tutorial forever. Thanks!

Hmmm. I'd 1) pull off the joining fascia part way so as to miter the joint (not butt), 2) glue the joint, 3) not put the joint on the rafter so I don't split the wood ends with nails, 4) use 2+ in galvanized finishing nails to prevent splitting and ease of covering, 5) use bondo instead of caulk, 6) sand all results. Then will actually look good when done. BTW, I'd also use a square as a guide when crosscutting, or use a sliding miter saw.

Here in California, I noticed that they don't cut vertical to separate the rotten wood. They cut it at an angle. So to put in the new wood, you will also have to cut it at the same angle and reconnect. I think it prevents sliding down better.

Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for. Not to sure about the recip method. Perhaps battery circular saw to start cut might be a little safer. My 54V recip is a monster and heavy, I bow to it before I use it :)

Easily explained. Nice clean finish 👍🏾 I had hell with this lil mini hand saw. Waiting on Home Depot to send my reciprocating saw.

Great video! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. I'm adding a layer of asphalt shingles and needed to know if it'd smarter to replace the rotted areas of fascia before shingling. Apparently it doesn't matter, but do you have any suggestions?
