What is the Theory of Everything?

Stephen Wolfram recently announced the Wolfram Physics project, a way to find the fundamental theory of physics. Is it a theory of everything? And how does it describe General Relativity and Einstein’s work? John Michael Godlier is joined by Jonathan Gorard to discuss the Wolfram physics project, and why it may be a beautiful path towards the fundamental theory of physics.

Is there one rule that describes the universe?

Jonathan Gorard is immensely knowledgeable and also good at explaining his thoughts. He should have his own channel...or at the very least, you should have him back to discuss more topics on a _regular_ basis.

Fantastic guest.. Ask him one simple question and he is off. A great indication he is so full of information, no notes needed.

You can't justify making episodes with him so short. He's such an excellent guest!

Discussions like this make me feel so warm and safe and calm. Maybe it's what some people might describe as a spiritual feeling.

In my humble opinion, this is probably your best episode yet. I understood maybe 1/10th of what your guest was saying, but even that small amount was enough to completely blow my mind.

My brain branches off into a different universe when Jonathan is so ingenious and brilliant

Here is a person so tuned in and turned on to his field of study he has forgotten the word "interview " . Awesome!

Didn't understand almost any of this. But it was cool to listen to the guy really sound like he understood what he was talking about.

I've been watching jmg videos constantly these last few days and there is one interesting thing I noticed. Every guest seems to be genuinely impressed with the questions that are asked by John because they are not the generic simple questions that are asked by the main stream...

Great little episode!

I have to say, I particularly enjoyed Jonathan's answer to the simulation hypothesis question - I think the makes exactly the right point. It's not that it's irrelevant whether or not our universe is (inside of) a computer, but what we understand by that is incredibly anthropocentric - we imagine a computer that is "made", engineered by someone or something that thinks, behaves, and exists in ways fundamentally like us. Ironically, that criticism extends to the type of religious thought that ascribes human motives and emotions to the metaphysical.

It may well be that we're living in a computer that had been in some way engineered - but it's a poor description because too many of us still think of "computer" as a beige box beside a desk, "engineers" as nerdy people with poor social skills, and "simulation" as a type of video game that some of the latter play on the former. Or at least that it's something that is similar enough to those.

So, Jonathan hit the nail on the head there - I think it's really just a misdirection which makes a computational universe seem like a silly sort of process that, if true, would somehow "cheapen" our existence in this universe as mere playthings of computer nerds from the future, and somehow make our existence less real.

Admittedly I'm not entirely sold on the idea of a computational universe, even after all these episodes - but I think we do need to take the idea a little more seriously than that. By which I mean let's take our anthropocentric glasses off for a bit and think of how a universe could be computational and/or engineered without requiring it to be the product of someone or something that thinks like us.
