The First Manned Rocket Flight Wasn’t in the 1960s

The soviets may been the first to get a human into space in the 1960s, but people have been strapping themselves to and piloting rockets for several hundred years, if not more.
I use the word "piloting" loosely, as much of it it just involves a tube and a tun of gunpowder.
