This Huge Abandoned Hospital Left Millions of Dollars Behind

This abandoned hospital was an inpatient hospital that specialized in mental health and psychopathy, long-term care of chronic diseases, and physical rehabilitation services. The hospital was also known for treating indigent and uninsured patients referred by other hospitals and clinics in the local area.
The hospital was originally built in 1910 as an infirmary and accommodated close to 2,000 people who were destitute because of poverty, mental illness, alcoholism, and other problems. Residents also helped maintain farmland all around the facility.
By 1932, there were more than 4,000 patients, including over 500 with tuberculosis, a deadly air-borne disease that affects the lungs, caused by a specific bacteria that spreads from one person to another through contagions in the air. After this, the hospital added more buildings to the property that specialized in the treatment of tuberculosis, and hence it become a TB sanitarium.
By the 1950s advancements in the medical field and a relative cure for tuberculosis caused another shift within the hospital and the treatment regimen shifted to a physical health care modality.
In 2011, with an everchanging landscape in the medical field the hospital narrowly avoided a complete shut down, but unfortunately they did have to cease operations of all the hospital’s inpatient services. The hospital continued to function as an important part of the area’s health care systems by providing outpatient treatment until it ended up permanently closing in 2020.
As of 2023, developers are eye-balling the 150-acre site as they will most likely move to demolish the historic aging buildings as officials have long stated that the hospital is “too old and expensive to upkeep and maintain.” It’s a matter of time before yet another piece of history is erased forever.

Wow all this abandoned medical equipment. And we wonder why we pay so much for medical treatment yet they can just leave this expensive stuff behind. WTF

As a veteran who served in Afghanistan, their doctors would LOVE to have this equipment/facility. This is a great video but kind of depressing to see all this stuff left behind.

It's a shame to see expensive machinery being abandoned to waste away. I am sure there would have been charitable hospitals that would have gladly flipped the bill to have it shipped to them.

This was a very interesting exploration of an old abandoned hospital. Lots of equipment left in there. If usable they should donate to other places in need such equipment.

It’s amazing just how quickly mildew and rust can take over a building or a house when no air is circulating within the structure. Two years that’s all it took for decay to set in. Sunlight and air are very important.

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! I'm not into shorts, I love the long explores like this.
Absolutely great find, except for that black mold. Yikes!

I have always said- "if only a Morgue could talk"; you can only imagine the sad stories it would say

I live near this hospital. Part of it is still being used as Oak Forest health Center. This place is very creepy even in daylight. Creepy but yet very cool. I love it. Awesome video and thank you.

Top of the art hospital for sure with millions and millions$ worth of equipment in desperate need of other countries, it breaks my heart😢and why doesn't it get donated rather than have it deteriorate when it's desperately needed somewhere else. I trust that some authorities can look into this case🇿🇦

Very interesting exploratory visit. I'm amazed none of the equipment was sold, or distributed to other clinics that might have been damaged by natural disasters or war. I have seen state and even some private agencies where assets had to be destroyed at end of service, per service contracts. Stupid, really. But, that's the way it goes. I come from a family with an extensive medical background. Seeing this medical clinic/hospital in this condition would've brought tears to my parents' eyes. Shameful waste. Maybe the owners thought they were going to scratch out another year of operation. Thanks for sharing this.

Great video! The hospital closed in 2011, but it continued its outpatient services until 2020. Now they’re located somewhere else.

Amazes me, as I watch these videos, at the waste of goods, machinery etc. I know it’s outdated now however I saw a Cat scan machine as well as an X-ray machine, hundreds of thousands of dollars ~~ sitting there, which at the stage this hospital closed, would have been a valuable asset of this place, to be either forwarded to another hospital or sold. Amazing ! 💕💕🐾🐾🇦🇺🇦🇺xoxoxi

It just blows my freaking mind that equipment like this that's worth tens of thousands can be left behind when it can be sold or even donated to needy organizations. People truly believe money grows on trees. BTW, the equipment you were identifying as an "endoscope" was actually an otoscope/Ophthalmoscope set.

This place was huge! I can't believe how much stuff is left behind.

Also be careful of dangers like old equipment emitting radiation and the more common, toxic mold. I wish you guys would wear respirators in certain places, lots of black mold.

The reason for this fast rate of decay, is most probably freezing water lines. When they closed the hospital and shut down the heating, they should have emptied all the water lines, or if it's technically impossible, keep the heating on, set it just above freezing point. This is such a waste! Lots of these medical equipment could be used in other hospitals. And mostly because of the mold, to restore the building to usable condition would cost an astronomical amount of money, just because they didn't care when they closed the hospital.

I saw some comments about the medical equipment being out dated as well as some about the shame of it going to wast and I'm sure that there is some truth in both statements. In my lifetime I have see some of the newest and finest and I have seen equipment over 40 years old still used all day everyday. There is no excuse our law needs to change. Many people in rural communities and inner cities could be helped with that fine equipment either here in America or abroad if not needed here. We have become a throw away society because nothing is made by hand we get it from the store but we need to remember that somebody put blood sweat and tears into developing that equipment for the benefit of man kind and a wage to feed there family. God bless his children around the world. Maybe one day we will realize God has provided us the resources and we are Christ hands to reach a lost and dying world.

4:48 I remember when dentist chairs were like that in the 90s. I always wondered what the purpose of those straps on the chair arms were. modern ones don't have them. Crazy how they left everything to rot!
