A kennel for a month and a half? How does someone do that and not feel bad. That’s so terrible. There are terrible kennels out there and even the good ones have to many dogs they can’t give them the attention they need. Your dog essentially thinks you abandoned him at that point.

This kind of happened to me; horrible people left their dog in my grandparents' house without food or water. He was sleeping in the crawlspace in the basement among his messes. He had a horrible fungal infection all over his skin. We took him home (after they were evicted for non-payment of rent for months) and cleaned him up, fed him, and then straight to the vet. It was very expensive to get him fixed and back to "normal". After about 9 months the original owners called and let us know his name but didn't ask for him back. Horrible years treat an animal like that, especially one that's supposedly a member of the family. He is the sweetest dog, super smart, and now he's happy in the country with a huge yard.

Lovely family who rescues dogs instead of purchasing. I will always remember people who purchase pets instead of rescue, value appearances over compassion. It's a horrific characteristic that is NOT limited to pet purchasing.
