Lido Key Casino was built in 1940 which is not too far away from here. The concrete piers weren’t even there until more recent. Locals have told me back in the 60’s the water line was by the end of the pier. Maybe someone fell or dropped some rolls getting off a boat after winning at the casino. There were steamboats that ran from Sarasota to Tampa back in that time frame too. Either way it was a bucket lister and I’m loving everyone’s guesses on where the merc mystery pile came from. Always a blast hanging with ya and nobody else I could think of who’d I want in on it for all the good you do🤘👊

Only time I've seen that many Mercs at once, was in Louisville, Ky. when a friend found a roll of them in the sidewalk median off Bardstown Rd. The paper was gone but the roll was still stacked against each other. 2 were 1916's No D.

So at my local beach we used to find a lot of silver coins before they started renourishment. Turns out it was a WW2 gun emplacement. Most of the coins were dated just before or during the war.

This made me laugh. I remember my hunting buddy say to me once, there’s too many coins here let’s move. 😳. What? We wanted gold rings. It was distracting. The most concentrated bunch I ever found was where there used to be a Coke machine on the boardwalk of a yacht club. Cokes used to be ten cents when we had silver money. People drop them and they rolled and fell through the spaces of the boardwalk into the water.

In the 1950s I grew up in a beach area which we spent much of our lives on. An engineer friend decided to make lots of two seater catermeran style floating pedal operated machines. They were a lot of fun to hire. He ran a fish and chip shop there and hired these out. I live 2000km away now but wish I could go and metal detect there. Even in the sand dunes but it is all gone now and multi million dollar homes across the beach front. Changing world
