Since 1991, the year in which their music began taking on western Europe, the musicians from Clejani have performed all over the world in places as culturaly different as possible - Tokyo, Paris, Singapore, New York, Istambul, London, Los Angeles. If we are to name just a few of their fans and collaborators, we'd go for Yehudi Menuhin, Kronos Quartet (alongside which they produced), Johnny Depp (with whom they starred in "The Man Who Cried") and Yohji Yamamoto.

Under the name of Taraf de Haidouks, the group was awarded in 2002 with BBC World Music prize for Best Group in Europe & Middle East.

Altough we are inclined to push forward their recent achievments in the music industry, what makes their performances so powerful is not the last 10 or 20 years in which they were exposed to such diverse cultures, but their own cultural & musical heritage. The group is formed by authentic lautari that have grown and developed around their culture's music, have performed since they were children and to whom music is life.

They are the last generation of its kind.

Their craft is the result of centuries of gypsy culture transmitted through music.

The musicians in Clejani are probably the most inspired and vital of all lautari in Romania, being surely stimulated by their southern origins. Taraf de Caliu brings together legends of gypsy music such as Gheorghe „Caliu” Anghel, Viorica Rudareasa, Marius Manole, Ninel Basaru, Sile Neacau.

Gheorghe „Caliu” Anghel (founding member of Taraf de Haidouks) is the oldest member of the group and its founder. He's a real entertainer, always with an appetite for improvizations, a master of their original, classical, style but surely a musician that preferes the more modern twists that their music can take.

Sile Neacsu. Their impros with the doube-bass guitar are amazing. They are the manifestation of the ultimate gypsy rhythm, being mesmerised by the-more-urban nature that their music can take.

Ninel Basaru plays the cimbalom. Keeping the traditional style of gypsy music, he stands out in the crowd of lautari in Romania today.

Viorica Rudareasa (founding member of Taraf de Haidouks) is a special presence. She is the lead vocal of the group and she loves to improvise on Indian Bollywood themes. This comes from her childhood when, unlike the other members of the group, she was not exposed to traditional gypsy music in her family. So she used to sing themes from movies with Raj Kapoor after her grandfather's steel working "beats".

Marius Manole (founding member of Taraf de Haidouks) is the master of the keyboards and the accordion, being one of the founding members of Taraf de Haidouks.
