The story of Taraf de Caliu is a metamorphosis in itself, as after more than three decades of relentlessly touring all over the world, the founding members of Taraf de Haidouks came back home to Romania and started this new project.

They show their skills plentifully in this fabulous performance of traditional Romanian music, a joyful and lively music showed performed for the first time on a TEDx stage. Since 1991, their music conquered Western Europe in tours and performances on almost all continents. Their talent and roots have evolved with culturally diverse influences from Tokyo, Singapore, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Istanbul or London. If we are to name just a few of their fans and collaborators, we’d go for Yehudi Menuhin, Kronos Quartet (alongside which they produced), Johnny Depp (with whom they starred in “The Man Who Cried”) and Yohji Yamamoto.

After more than three decades of relentlessly touring all over the world, the founding members of Taraf de Haidouks came back and started a new project: Taraf de Caliu – comprising of: “Gheorghe “Caliu” Anghel – violin, Ionică Tănase – cimbalom, Marius „Marin” Manole – accordion / voice, Sile Neacșu- bass, Filip Simeonov – Clarinet, Viorica Rudăreasa – voice, Ionuț Gulună – voice.

Forget about sonorisation Isuse, the only thing I regret is they’re so seldom seen on YouTube . Vintage gipsy bands with Violine bass cymbal and clarinet slowly vanishes and that’s such a massive loss. It’s a great privilege to watch you MAESTRO Caliu, thank you !

In rest, respect!

Those musicians are maestros. Authentic and skilled, they play from ther hearts. The soundmix - sorry - horribly. Caliou and his musicians don‘n need fancy echos and reverb on the sound of their instruments. They are perfect sounding in themselfes. Somerimes I have the feeling, that the sound technicians are in competion with the musicians, want to make „art“ of themselfes. Please NO. Just convey the art of the musicians. They are the stars. Please take a step back. No fancy echos. Dont interfere with the music. Thanks. ( And, no echo on the monitorspeakers … ). The musicians have a hard time then.

this is beautiful, but such a shame it's being white washed. this is a band of Roma men, proudly representing lăutar Roma traditions. why tf does it need to be branded as strictly "Romanian" music, and not "Roma Romanian" music, which would be the more accurate description?
