It’s one more reason why hearing screening at age 40 should be standardized as a procedure for physicians to recommend when you hit that age.

Anyone taking ED meds should have a baseline hearing test, then annual or bi-annual retests for as long as they are routinely taking the medications.

I have heard about certain antibiotics causing this. Maybe the infection caused the deafness. But never heard about this. Good information, thank you for this information.

I am on very mild antibiotics for a reoccurring UTI and I am freaked out about ototoxicity, but in my case I am not on a strong dose to do damage but its something I asked the audiologist about and she mentioned that with heavy antibiotics like the ones they use with cancer patients they monitor your hearing because of side effects like this, so its not a one and done its a consistent use that will cause issue here, but even something like basic iburprophen causes ototoxicity as well, this should be spoken about more often as many people do not know this, wondering if my recent dip in my hearing has been caused by my antibiotics …sometimes there isn't enough definitive proof that it is from this, especially since i already have a slight bit of noise induced damage that I have been protecting my ears thus far, is there a way to see the damage from ototoxic drugs on an audiogram ?

I feel that my ear has a ear infection inflamed ear on my left ear my doctors keeps saying I need surgery implant ears but I think they are wrong. Weird. I took too much once & when I finished with my girl, it felt like my bloodpressure suddenly dropped or something cause my ears started ringing like crazy, I felt feint and had to sit down asap until the walls stopped closing in on me, vision and hearing normalized & death got in his car and left. I keep it natural now. Lol

Thank you for addressing this issue. It amazes me that so many other conditions create a greater risk for hearing loss. While Viagra is not an issue for me, i have several comorbid conditions that can result in hearing loss. Excessive use of any medication can cause damage to other parts of the body. Excessive aspirin use can cause all kinds of problems. The case of hearing loss caused by medication that surprised me was late Rush Limbaugh. While i do not agree with some of his arguments, considering his occupation, it would seem like he would have stopped taking a medication that was damaging his hearing. The result was that he needed cochlear implants to continue his professional career. I guess addiction is stronger than logic.

Cliff, is only partially correct. SSN (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss) should be treated as a medical emergency (like you would if woke up with no vision in one eye). SSN can be caused by other things (viral infection, brain tumor, etc. Very rapid treatment may be the key to recovery of hearing. “Scheduling an appointment” is too long a process …. Rapid treatment with injected steroids (not oral, and not anti-biopics) may be key. Also worth noting most internal med docs only encounter SSN a few times in decades of practice. I would say, in this case, go directly to an ENT whose practice can also test your hearing. I had an episode of SSN and treatment with injected steroids caused recovery of my hearing; oral steroids did nothing. Time is of the essence!!
