In Latin countries, we scratch them to help them ripen faster. So if you can buy them cheap with scratches, don't worry, the fruit will be just as good as an scratched.

once the sap are extracted, fresh papayas are not thrown away in southeast asia. they are made into papaya salad that is consumed in thailand, laos, and cambodia. the lost in its value makes it even better affordable.

Growing up, we applied the sap to wounds (in liberia 🇱🇷) it burned but was good at stopping the bleeding and healed faster. Can’t tell you scientifically why but it did.

Instead of selling the papayas as scarred and bruised fruit, they should just turn it into papaya juice and there you go, they get their money back tenfold for all natural organic squeezed, papaya juice. No waste, all profit.

Papain is a more powerful meat tenderizer than bromelain, which is found in pineapple stem and juice. If you want a more controlled tenderisation without the pineapple taste, extract the bromelain from the stem. Be careful to not heat it up, or the enzyme will stop functioning, it's quite fragile.

Papain is fun though, turns the toughest meat into a weird gooey mass if you're not careful. I forgot some beef cubes (for goulash) overnight and it just chewed through it...pretty disgusting, but cool!

I had GIRD for many years, was prescribed Omeprazole and Zyrtec and it didn't work. I took papaya enzymes instead for a year and now I don't have GIRD anymore...

It's also an alternative to abortion in southeast Asia. Pregnant women avoid eating papaya so not to lose the baby.

"Some might wonder, will this break down the meat in my body?" You might not understand since you don't have one, ChatGPT, but humans are not asking that about papayas.

Try cooking the green papaya fruit with coconut milk and some herbs like tumeric, galangal, ginger, garlic shallot. Can add tofu and chicken into the soup... taste great

Actually scarred papayas taste better than unscarred ones. Unscarred ones have a bitter taste close to the skin. In Africa we do this to make them taste better.

I dont know why everyone is talking about papaya being used as a salad or meat marinater. In India, raw papaya is eaten as vegetable. We eat raw papaya as a vegetable dish with chapati, the riped one is treated as a fruit snd eaten.

Papayas used to be an inexpensive fruit. Now I know why it's so expensive

I once peeled off unripe papaya for chicken tinola. My hands start itching and my callus hands easily peeled off. Effective way to exfoliate callus feet but as long as you can endure that itchiness.

Half ripe papaya is a great afternoon snack, crunchy and sweet, dip it with soy sauce and vinegar to taste.

Those who don't know papaya peels are still used to clear wine during fermentation.. 😊

There's a traditional dish in Bengal where the Meat(Goat meat) is cooked with papaya. May sound gross or a sweetdish but after done it is the softest and the spiciest meat that you can have with Roti (Flat Bread)

Yes, it's useful and expensive but small timers like us will have no opening for us to sell to. The cosmetic industry has their own plantations or get from large plantations.
