I shall forever scream the word "scream"

The way one of my instructors shouted sounded like the word "DIE!" to the 5 yr olds he was training, unbeknownst to him. They were tentative about screaming at first but he got them into it. So when they were at the competition they were screaming DIE!!! in demonstrations. Judges were shaking their heads.at my coach who was tripping over himself w confusion. It was hilarious to watch.

Higaonna Sensei talked about kiai being called "yae" (矢声) - literally "arrow voice" - in Okinawa.

I had fellow student that screamed “WHATZ UUUPPP!!!”really, really loud as he hit you super hard. I thought it was a hilarious kiai!

I grew up doing Karate and Tae Kwon Do and developed a habit of doing a Kiai. When I went to train MMA, people would make fun of me for it. But when you’re in sparring, and you have a genuinely loud and intimidating kiai, there’s nothing that will freak your opponent out more.

I still remember there’s some athletes scream Kiai… it was so weird back then haha

Hiya! It's a trope in Japanese anime for characters to shout the name of the maneuver they're executing. I think it started mostly for the benefit of the audience but in recent years, some characters winkingly acknowledge that the shouts are kind of gratuitous if you only consider the internal logic of the fictional world 🤭.

KIAAA! I usually use Terry Silver’s kia, “ASSAAA!”

50 years in Shotokan I use the word Hey or hay coming from the lower abdominal muscles rather using the throat. As well, it is quicker and more effective for speed and power. There is a short Kiai and a long Kiai. . for different purposes. Thank you again for the memories, Jesse. My father was my Sensei. For each sit-up you do, say the word hay. It will give you steel abs when you need it.

The Kiai of taekwondo is to regulate breathing. You do a much more toned down Kia and can do it every time you do a strike and breath out air. Then you make a strong breathing noise when you breath in to make sure you keep breathing during training and sparring and whatnot.

When we did kiai (we rarely do it) during a Taekwondo class one time I was the only one that knew that the kiai is just the sound you make. So everyone but me were shouting “KIAI!”

I used to not say “kiai” or “hai” or anything like that, used to just go Needless to say I eventually got a very sore throat so I had to revert to quieter shouts. Gotta say the loud ones felt good though 😂

You should educate this to Mark Mugen a mixed martial arts fighter and YouTube content creator from the Philippines.
He often makes fun of Kiai in his shorts and videos so I unfollowed him and left a comment about knowing the cultures and to respect them.
