We're not expecting to find anything pin-compatible, but we do need to hit all those requirements to make it easy for people to use with microcontrollers / existing digital setups or with SBCs like the Raspberry Pi that don't generate MCK.

I defined that device at TI almost 15 years ago. The whole aim of that device was to make a great sounding, *easy to use* DAC. We saw a trend back then of streamed audio sources that didn't have nice clocking options. Everything needed a synchronous Master Clock. Customers were using two separate crystals in their products (one for 44.1 and the other for 48kHz!).
We ripped the PLL circuit from the TLV320AIC3254, made some tweaks and then took most of the DAC architecture from the venerable PCM1792. The additional digital density allowed us to add some better digital interpolation filters (which multiply you up from 48kHz to the oversampling output rate).
The real fun started with the PCM5122 and PCM5142. Those guys had miniDSP inside so you could do your EQ's and compressors in it.
What a lovely walk down memory lane.
