Introduction to German Expressionist Cinema

This video is the first in a series on the film movement known as German Expressionism. The video begins with a general overview of "expressionism" as a modernist artistic movement, looking in particular at some examples from painting. Then the video examines some general historical conditions of German Expressionist cinema as well as some of the most notable aesthetic characteristics of the movement.

I watched Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari today just out of curiosity and I enjoyed it. But learning about how deliberate the set design was just blew my mind, particularly the scene with Cesare and Jane. I'll be sure to check out more of your videos!

Very good presentation. I love nosferatu, metropolis, and faust, but most especially Cabinet of Dr Caligari. That last is one of the greats of the 20th century.

I had a semester of Film History class in Germany a while ago but unfortunately wasnt able to attend it for any longer than that. Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari was one of my favorite films we watched :)
