I built a tiny a-frame cabin in 7 days and now a year later I do have regrets. In todays video I go in depth about the Den Outdoors cabin I built and the regrets I made with some of my off-grid choices.

I love watching these reality check videos. I'm really big on planning and learning from other people's mistakes and success. As the saying goes "learn from other people's mistakes 'cause you can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself!" Thanks for this informative video!

I love these reality check videos. There is a lot of pie in the sky videos but as an engineer, i like to know what i am getting into and weigh the positives and negatives. Great informative.

Thanks for this! I watched your video when you built this, and ended up buying the $1, 000 plans for a different model from Den. (We also chatted by email a bit, and you got me in touch with a planner. Thanks again!).
I’m still sitting on the fence of what to do. I have a couple acres of raw land, that would cost about $50k to install utilities, so off grid has felt like the way to go. BUT the county is inconsistent with their permits, so it’s been really hard to commit to the project. I’m also looking at Vikka and King Kont models. I’m so ready to get something going, but the unknowns scare me. My financial resources are limited.
I really appreciate your lessons learned video.

You're so right about planning. You're example about compost toilets is a good example. Yes it costs a lot more than regular toilet but regular toilet requires building some sort of septic system. Most even in many rural areas have to pass inspection. Plus they require water to work. These things can cost thousands. So yes, plan everything and there will stlll be things you hadn't planned for.

I love hearing about your cabin. Please make more vids on your experience and also would like to see the review of how the cabin has been since you built it.

Weird that an architect would build a door on a tiny house that swings inwards. I would mod it, if possible, to open outwards to reclaim usable floor space near the front door for furniture and storage.

I want to know WHY you think it was discontinued!

I use rechargeable AAA batteries for my Airnnb lighting. They are brought in and changed as a matter of the cleaning. If I wanted to upgrade, it would be toward Lithium ion batteries for the cabin. Instead of wiring to each cabin, I keep the electricity centralized. Hope to shift to a community solar charging structure in a more central location as well.

Thank you Thank you Thank you. I really appreciate your content and the option for buying land at a DISCOUNT is AWESOME. I've been saving my money so that I can buy 3 acres. I just want to have a container home, a nice garden and possibly look into homesteading. Again, thank you. Peace Love and Blessings to you ❤️🤗❤️

Okay just a thought, Id place wheels with lock on bed so people can move it with moveable insulated wall that doubles for storage. This way in the summer you can have bed by the window, and in cooler weather you can move it back, but making things mobile gives you room choices.

I just signed a purchase deposit on 2 mirror glass cabins by Ood House. wish me luck! Also spending ~150, 000 in power and driveways to a 8 structure development!

You can make a composting toilet that costs less than $50 with wood, a toilet seat and a bucket.

Excellent insight - for others to make sure they have a support group of people knowledgeable about off-grid issues, general construction ...etc. Obvious you are focused on helping others avoid problems, using your own experience and difficulty as a guide.

Have subscribed and encourage others interested in architecture to do likewise.

I believe the creeping cold air might not be air coming in. You have a full (window) wall that is not insulated. If you're lucky, that window has an R5 value (at most), plus glass is thermally conductive. What you feel isn't wind, but plain cold accumulating on the interior glass and as we all know heat travels up and cold travels down. Better example: On a hot summer day, take a bottle of water out of the freezer and you will see exactly what happens. A cold mist will travel down the cold surface, hit the floor (or table) and keep traveling on the flat surface.
One way you could help prevent this is to create a thermal blanket by blowing hot air from the floor up (about 2-3 inches away from the window). The air stream needs to be powerful enough to reach the ceiling and needs to cover the entire window width (at ground level).

Hope this help. If you decide to move on with this project, I'd love to know how it went!
Good luck!

For the window you could use an insulated/'box' section blind. But mounted from the floor, extending upwards...

It’s sooo hard to have off grid with people renting, they don’t realize what that REALLY entails
