Thank you sir. All the other videos will not tell me how a planer board works. Your video was very informative. Great job. I'm going to buy some planer boards now.

Agree, don't need a huge boat to run planer boards. I have a 16' Alumacraft 165 tiller and in Spring that's my favored method for Walleye. I run a triple scotty rod holder mounted near front on each side with trolling rods. By putting those rods all at the front, it gives more room in the boat when bringing the fish in even with three or four in the boat. I then can even run a couple more rods trolling straight behind off the back of the boat.

If running multiple boards off of the same side, there is a simple method, known as the loop trick, used to allow the clip nearest the rod to release when a fish strikes, or if you give a firm pull on the rod. When that happens, the board will no longer plane out, and will come back to center position behind the boat. If you set up your spread properly, it will swing clear of all other boards. (they should be staggered out on the spread) This is great when checking or changing baits. No need to reel in other lines.
Also, if you set the release on the board properly, most times a strike from the fish will release the clip. When that happens, again, the board will fall out of the spread and bring itself behind the boat, where you can fight the fish, clear of other lines.
Once the lure is changed, or fish is retrieved, you can simply return the board back to its original spot by free spooling the board out to the same distance as it was before bringing it it. Keep just enough tension on the spool to prevent backlash. Once that distance is reached, lock it down, place rod in holder. The board will now swing back out into it's original position, going out and around any other boards on the inside of it.

Great video! Thanks for all this practical, technical info. I will be testing two sizes of boards way up north in the tundra in the next couple of weeks. I hope they help me zero in on the biggies. :-)

Technique catches everything from walleye and musky to lakers and salmon👍

Awesome video! Super informative. I think I might have missed a piece though about having planer boards snap free with a strike & slide down the line to the bead above the lure's leader to avoid giving a fish a concussion.

Really informative video. I actually bought a planer board this winter and want to try it on the lakes by my cottage. We and a cottage neighbor were trolling the shoreline, me behind the boat and he was casting the shoreline. He caught 9 pike and I caught two. It seemed the pike were holed up around the trees in 3 or 4 feet of water around the places I couldn't get close enough to. Thank you!

I fish the upper st croix most days after work. Fishing walleyes. Most times i find walleyes in 3-7feet of water. The only way to troll floating rapalas upstream is the planer board. Rapala f07 works great with the crappie sized planer boards

I highly suggest buying a front trolling motor, I use a minn kota terrova 24v, I pilot is a game changer.. little idle ur big motor straight locked, then steer with the wireless remote on the terrova all day, u can even do much more with a nice hummingbird fish finder, the terrova even has a transducer built into it.. spot lock is awesome too
