Planting Fall Vegetables In Louisiana: Brassicas and More

Join me as I plant more Fall vegetables in my Zone 9 South Louisiana backyard organic raised bed garden. I've got a bunch of brassica seedlings (e.g. cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts) that I started from seed that I need to go ahead and plant. I also have some additional succession sowing that I need to do. In addition, I've still got to plant some garlic to over-winter. Fall temperatures have finally moved into our deep south area so it's time to get the Fall garden where it needs to be. Planting fall vegetables in Zone 9A, especially in south Louisiana is so much fun and the type of vegetables you can harvest varies greatly from the Spring/Summer season. Plus it's not nearly as hot as you know it can be during the summer. Planting vegetables at home in the fall is well worth the while and is great even for beginners.

Great, helpful video. I like the idea of mixing up the types of plants in a space. Greetings from south Louisiana.

I may not remember to comment on more of the videos, but I really enjoy your garden tips and tricks. We took up the challenge to plant our first spring garden which did great. We planted for fall as well. Thanks again for the effort and time it takes to make these videos. We really appreciate them.

It's so nice to see the celery coming up. Our celery refused to grow past celery tops.

Down here in Covington, La. just started to get serious about growing veggie $$. I bought a raised bed and had some 5 gal buckets. Planted 3 types of tomatoes creole’s, jelly beans & Roma’s. Oh my gosh love my tomato & Mayo sandwiches. I did get a few Japanese eggplants but very small. Have a few red amaranth plants but the caterpillars enjoyed them not me. Herb garden prolific Italian basil, Thai basil, sage, thyme, oregano and chives. Someone gave me scallions, (can I grow them year round?) I divided them and they gave me green onions for weeks. Need to plant more for sure. Bought 2 more raised beds getting them ready for my fall planting. I have lettuce, spinach, radishes, cabbage, broccoli rabe, watermelon beets, snow beans, Bok Choy, Chinese cabbage & kale . I planted way too much in the spring and didn’t stagger my planting so too much, sometimes but I managed to use it all well. Trying to save a little money going to fill the bottom of my raised beds with dry leaves and straw the top soil. My plan is to augment the soil with peat, compose & miracle grow. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks love your videos so much information for south Louisiana gardening.

Do you have a lot of squirrels in your area? If so, how do you keep them from destroying your garden?

I also just planted some cabbage, beets(because I've never grown them) and my garlic as well. I'm also going to try to plant out my greens and lettuces this week. The forecast is actually looking pretty ideal for new plantings the next week or so.

When do you plant your garlic and onions? I am just north of Lake Charles, zone 9a? I just recently found your channel. I played in the garden for years but got serious after retiring and my garden keeps growing up and out. LOL But I have yet to be successful with onions, garlic, or Brussels sprouts.
