I normally don't comment on videos but I agree with you. I was so excited to read this book but once I started reading it, I got bored with multiple parts of it. Even though the side characters didn't have much development, I still found myself liking them more than the main characters. I'm glad I read it but I was also glad when I finished it because towards the end, I just wanted to be done reading it.

I feel seen. I thought I was the only one who didn't like this book. Moreover, I DNFed it. At around chapter 12. I really don't have a lot of thoughts except that I was bored and I didn't see any chemistry between the characters. I'm going to watch this review over and over to write my review of this book now.

it honestly felt like not a lot happened in the book - i read it on my ipad so i didn't know how close i was to the end; when it ended i was shocked because it only felt as though we were halfway through

I agree completely with your opinions about One Last Stop. The story had oodles of characters that would be fun to learn about but there is next to no character arc for anyone but August. It's almost like the story was an outline with a bunch of unnecessary filler. Such a bummer.

This book could have been about 100 pages and accomplished the same things that it did. There were so many unnecessary scenes/characters/plot lines that added absolutely nothing to the main story or to any sort of plot movement/character development. While I did like some of the side characters, I thought most of them were pointless when it came to the story as a whole. Like, what did the drag queens actually add to anything? Why were there so many employees at Billy's? Anyway, I agree with your review entirely, and I know you were avoiding spoilers, so you didn't give your opinion on the ending, but I want to say that I was SO DISAPPOINTED with the direction it went. I had a whole ending planned out in my head that might have salvaged the book, and then the author just went nOpe and made everything wrap up in a little bow of convenience to make all the characters happy. Ugh, I can't believe I suffered through the last three days of reading this book for the ending to be so much of a let down.

*spoilers ahead*

Honestly same, I love love love RWRB so I thought I'd love OLS and I did read it fairly quickly but the more I think about it, the more things I'm like "huh, that was odd and I feel like it didn't really work..." My 'entertainment' (per your categories) would be relatively highly-rated, I think Casey McQuiston's style is fairly easy to read, and even if not a lot happens, I got through it pretty quickly, because the writing is not hugely complicated (I was also excited at the promise of it going somewhere with all those interesting characters I think)...

The amount of storylines... I was so annoyed at her not doing any work for school?! Like pretty much all I do is school work how did August not do anything and still graduate lmao (same with her just skipping work for so long?!)

The characters all seem fun on the surface (and the representation is great and I love the found family trope don't get me wrong) but it seems like that's all there is... like they're very two-dimensional and I think that makes them appear pretty privileged, even if technically they're not in many ways... like August skips weeks of work and apparently can still pay her share of rent just fine? Her room hunt is seemingly insanely easy (I've never been to NYC let alone lived there but I'm assuming it's not that easy irl), she graduated without doing any school work, and other stuff like that... idk just everything always seems to go right for all the characters?

The subway aspect overall was fine imo but WHY DID THEY DO THE DIRTY IN A GROSS SUBWAY CAR, idk I get that she couldn't get off but that scene... like besties.... that's not worth it sorry

Honestly, I don't mind not having much character development but what I really disliked about them was how unbalanced they seemed? Like in RWRB I feel like we get to know Henry and Alex equally well, see both of them interact with their own (and each other's) friends and family, etc. whereas in OLS I feel like we hardly get to know Jane at all. Like yeah her background is crammed in there somewhere at the end but we don't really get to see her interact with anyone? And like you said, even August pretty much only likes her for her body/looks and the fact that she is kind to strangers apparently? And just in general Jane's character was super passive in the whole story which annoyed me a lot.

Idk I really love RWRB and I loved the idea of OLS, so I was extremely excited to read it but the execution fell short and I'm honestly pretty disappointed :(

I for sure see what you're saying! I really liked it, but I honestly think part of it is how few light, happy WLW novels there are out there (and the quality of the ones that do exist isn't great) that I went in with super low expectations haha. I also didn't read her first book so that probs helped w my expectations.

excited for a drag storyline & a cold case subplot….. but definitely worried for the execution based on just about everything you said lmao

Yeah, everyone seems to LOVE this book, but I haven't been all that quick to go out and read 😏 I was one of the few GAYS(or maybe the only one 😬) that thought *Red White & Royal Blue* was JUST OK 🤷🏻‍♂️ Maybe I'm just a bitter OLD QUEEN who can't connect with a fairytale romance 🙄 Anyways, great review... I'm sure I'll read it someday ✌🏽

I loved this video!! Your criticisms of their characters were so perceptive-- I finished the book not feeling like the two of them were real, nuanced people, which was soo disappointing considering a lot of the wlw couples I've read similarly fall short here :( i'm gonna go watch all of your videos now haha i trust your judgement 🙏

Nice and helpful review! I appreciate your honesty! I have been debating reading this book, so your thoughts are helpful!

Interesting! I was absolutely not into the first 25% of the book, because it was slow but I ended up loving it. I think the romance part of it was HUGE for me being queer, plus all the plots were very reflective of the chaos of adulthood.

I think I was one of the few people who didn't enjoy Red, White and Royal Blue so when I learned that McQuinston wrote another book, you can say I was uninterested in reading it lol. But the stuck-in-time aspect seems really out of place to me lol, like this book from what I saw was marketed as a romance not science fiction😂 I really liked this review and the way that it was done!!

Love to hear your PERSONAL thoughts, your opinions are valid and shouldn't bring you haters! yikes though at the overall score--I also super enjoyed RW&RB and had high high hopes for this one!

This book was so hyped up and I was excited to read it but it was such a let down. I forced myself to finish it, the chapters are so long and the pacing is so slow. Nothing happens for half of the book. August keeps skipping class and work for Jane yet she still had a job and didn't get kicked out of school.

I didn't care about the characters or Jane and August's relationship. It felt like their relationship was based on physical attraction than what they liked about the other as a person. Jane had two personality traits: quippy and horny, and "This is what life in the 1970s was like". Then the other side characters had one thing they were interested in become their whole personality.

The convenience thing annoyed me too especially with August's grandparent's estate getting settled and she gets enough money in time to help save the diner. I did enjoy the mystery with August's uncle but again with the convenience.

Ok, expectations lowered, which is actually probably a good thing. I loved the break down you did 🙂
