The newer one would be safe in a room with children who like to stick their fingers into the fan and I used to have the same one on the right and I sold that years ago at a yard sale after getting bored of it.

Meh, My 2002 Windmere (Same as yours) Compared to my SF-16H also isn't much different from each other. The mesh grills are nice, just a bitch to clean.
