Gen Con tips:
Really good walking shoes. I walked over 60 miles last Gen Con
Stay Hydrated. It will be in the 90s outdoors and high humidity
Bag with some walking snacks if you want to save on food money and keep your energy up.
Allow more time than you think you will need for pretty much everything. Crowds impede movement and there is just so much to see and for your first time, it will be a bit overwhelming.
Print out the printable exhibit hall map, mark where you want to really go, and use it to find the things you want to see.
If you are wanting early access to the hall with your media badge, get in line for it super early Thursday morning. Like 5 am....
Portal games keynote on Friday night is a good time, I recommend it, and getting to know Ignacy as a content creator is a good idea.
Take a break and decompress. Gen Con after a day or two pushes me into my "I hate people mode" until I escape and bleed it off.
The further you go from ICC the less you have to actually wait to get food to eat. Don't eat the food in the ICC....

GenCon tip: spend a bit of time in the auction room. You don't even have to bid, just watch it happen for a while.

I found the same issues with First Martians too. I felt so confused going into the game after reading the rules. I wish there was a bit more development in the rulebook. I picked up The Fox in the Forest because I am horrible at trick taking games and thought this would be a good game to learn the "tricks" of those games :)

I feel your pain on good mics picking up "mouth sound." I work in radio, and I *always* have liquids with me when I'm going on air so I can get the inside of my mouth wet right before turning the mic on. :-)
