As part of the education portfolio of #CERNScienceGateway, the #CERNSolvayEducation programme was launched by CERN jointly with @SolvayGroup for the #STEMeducation of high-schoolers. It is designed for teenagers who want to go beyond high-school physics and get an introduction to CERN #physics and #technology. In each video, you can test your understanding by answering quiz questions. If you are at least 16 years old, you can enrol for free in the online CERN-Solvay Education Programme towards obtaining a digital certificate, which will allow you to apply for a CERN-Solvay residential student camp.

If you owned an old CRT tv you too have a very specific particle accelerator . That big wound component on the back of the tube steer the particles across the screen in a scanning motion and they excite the coating on the inside of the screen and that makes the picture. The thing that gets me is that seems a lot of technology and power to do what an LCD or LED display does today . This is why you get figures burnt in to the screen of the old TVs . The phosphorus coating gets burnt off too evenly in the same place. Think how simple miniaturisation of semiconductors and components always bring our usable technology to the place we purchase it and for the bargain prices we pay today. They say a brand new microchip for use by the military and governments today could easily cost $1 billion dollars to research and manufacture but within ten years that chip would be integrated in to semiconductors today for the price of a dollar .
