Here's the story of that performance you've watched.

The Year was 1988, Nelson Mandela who was still imprisoned and was celebrating his 70'th birthday. At Wembley stadium in London England a host of artists came together to do a tribute concert/ Protest gathering in his honor.

Stevie Wonder was about to go onstage but during sound checks it was discovered that his sequencer didn't work which meant that his keyboards didn't have the proper sounds and that he couldn't play. So rather than make a fool of himself, Stevie bowed out and the organization put Chapman on stage to perform in Stevie's slot.

Note how quiet the audience is, here's this girl with just a guitar and they all were on her side. Giving her the opportunity to do what she was there to do, they were very respectful.

Tracy chapman is amazing. She's like a god to many of us working class people in the UK. Her entire debut album was faultless.

At the Women's March in Washington DC 2018 this played over the speakers as we were assembling. 10, 000 women stopped what they were doing to sing along. Incredibly powerful moment.

I saw her live in Oslo. Only her on stage. Amazing artist, and so humble. Her message is of love, and for people to stand up to the corrupt system we are victim of. Stand up!

This is a beautiful song very emotional to me, I honestly can relate I love this artist and I was listening to this as a child, to this day it still touches my heart and I wish everyone listen to her lyrics closely She sending a strong message hoping she can reach out and change what is happening In society to this day I hope to God that this song reaches out and touches people I am so glad that you did this reaction to this song This song needs to be heard by everyone there is a lot of people out there that can relate I have been poor all my life and it is hard to get to the top I’ve worked for years since I was 16 I am 37 now and not much has changed I’ve worked for a long period of time and i also have help from the government but it’s not enough it’s only enough to get by. Jobs out here barely paying a little over a minimum wage if not the bare minimal And now with Covid going on people are risking their lives working it’s all so crazy to me never thought My kids would be wearing mask to school because of the pandemic just so much going on in this world but I want to thank you again doing this song this is always been one of my favorite songs ever heard and I hope to God more people see this Honestly there does need to be a change I do agree with her but she can not stand alone after a few years of hearing her song as a kid I never heard her again not on the radio it was very upsetting to me. If you ever get a chance listen to all her songs they are so true and what I like about her is She honestly has a voice that can change the world with her lyrics More people need to hear this song She is a brave beautiful Woman The lyrics to that song or so powerful honest I still cry to this day when I hear it

She has a beautiful voice and it is so unique you know right away it is her! I saw her at the Amnesty International Concert in Oakland, CA. We signed petitions to free political prisoners around the world. Including Nelson Mandela.

Her music was a huge part of my childhood. It's the first album by a lady I ever owned. Incredible woman and incredible music. We grew up very poor and rough and this music was a huge inspiration for our family. We left Ireland because of all the troubles around the time she debuted this album. We got to London and the first year was just breaking into empty flats and houses to squat. Once we got on our feet we got on a lot better buy my God her album and voice was a huge help to us, and even me as a young child.

Great reactions to your videos. God bless.

This, to me, isn't an angry song, it's about hope, hope that people finally understand that the world is driven by a minority, yes a minority, of wealthy, highly educated (ivy League legacies), white, straight, cis, men.

But there's an undercurrent, of the unprivileged, POC, women, LGBT+, High School dropouts, community college grads, minimal wage workers, and, eventually, we'll realize we're the majority.
