The Affordable Care Act Part 1 | What did it even change? | Health Insurance Deep Dive Ep 3.1

U.S. Health insurance Is messy, confusing, and in desperate need of change. The affordable care act, or “Obamacare” as it became known, was supposed to be revolutionary for the United States Healthcare system and in some was it was. But in others, we just got more of the same problems as before. Of course, with any new system, there will be problems to sort out before the real benefits can be seen.

In the first part of the third episode of my U.S. Health Insurance Deep Dive Series. I will introduce the Affordable Care Act and the changes it made to our health insurance system 90 days post signing, 180 days post signing, one year post signing and four years post signing.

The law itself is over 900 pages of confusing and utterly mind boggling legal jargon and the impacts it had on healthcare, finances, and people are so numerous. I had to split the video up or else we would have been here for two hours. Stay tuned for an in depth breakdown of the finances behind the system, how it works, and how it affected everyday people and the healthcare they could receive.

Thanks for actually saying what every intelligent person is thinking. I’m just a nursing student, but I honestly think that this country is too far gone. I’ll be looking at other countries in about fifteen years. Peace.

I'm enjoying this series. I'd really like to see interviews with medical professionals practicing in countries with different health care systems!

The reason for the insurance until the age of 26 was for a college student who was dx with cancer and needed treatment, she had to stay in school full time so that she could stay insurance while getting chemo etc, if she dropped out of school she would have lost her insurance and had to pay out of pocket for cancer treatment. Instead she had to work full time in school WHILE being treated for cancer. Her parents pushed for this change.

100% honest, I usually hate long form videos on content like this because it is overexplained or somewhat repetitive. I watched all 30 minutes of this though. Lots of concise information. Definite thumbs up from me! Thanks for the info and creating this. About to go watch #2!

I have been confused about the ACA for so long! Thanks for helping it make more sense. (and helping me be able to write this paper for school)

$500.00 a month and still have to pay $7000.00 before they pay for anything, that is insane, who developed such a system. Therre is no reason there cannot be universal health care.

I used to be extremely poor and I have a pre-existing medical condition, so the ACA actually helped me. However, my friend of low-middle income with several pre-existing conditions has been screwed over and over and over again. Now that my family dares to make $43, 000 a year, I am going to lose my coverage and have no idea what to do because Humira is over $5, 500 per month....

Great video. I love your humor and how you relay the info. I'm studying for my CEBS and on GBA1 module 3 and this helped a ton with understanding the implications of the ACA. I look forward to your other videos. Thanks again!

I had had cataract surgery and to my understanding affordable Care act would pay 60% of the cost. After my surgery they gave me a summary where they paid zero of my cost. They said I did not meet the deductible. Now I'm in a situation where I will have to pick up all the cost what probably will bankrupt me.

You are awesome thanks for this important information. I was also in the medical field and recently went in a more holistic route because I too was very frustrated with expensive medical cost for my patients. There’s no dollar amount when it comes to healing people. That’s the direction this country needs to go based on.

This series is very informative! Im Canadian and when we go to the Doctors we don't have to do anything regarding insurance. You just show them your health card and you are good :).

I pay $321 monthly. I think my deductible is $6, 500 with max out of pocket $8, 500. That is really expensive for me. There were some cheaper plans but I know I will need to do some cancer screenings this year and will need 'better' insurance. It's really depressing.

I am glad you made a video about this. I haven’t finished watching it yet, however, when I looked over my plans, and I was like wait what even changed because the commercials keep saying that it’s a more affordable now and it’s actually more expensive?? The plans are horrible.
I know you can relate because you’re a nurse practitioner, but I am a nurse and I don’t have healthcare because I can’t afford it and people always look at me crazy when I tell them that because they’re like but you’re a nurse?

I'm truly grateful for the ACA. No redlining. No exclusions for preexisting conditions. No retroactive cancellations going back years when an insured person developed an expensive condition. Even after what the Republicans did to damage it, the ACA has been a blessing for many.
