I feel it was just tragic how he created so much and constantly just got the shaft. He was a MONUMENTAL force amongst guitarists and also as a composer. Never got the accolades he deserved. Sykes has always held a spot in my top 3 list. Huge loss, grateful to have been alive and to have followed his career and journey since the beginning.

I met Sykes in '03 in Dublin, he signed my guitar and he was so cool, just himself in the lobby with a couple of roadies met him in the bar night before after the gig. The mans talent was off the scale. His version of "God Rest You Merry Gentleman" on the Merry Axemas album is phenomenal. I'll always treasurd having met him and telling him how much I lived thd Blue Murder album. RIP Legend

I just saw this tribute, John Sykes playing inspired me to play, got my Les Paul Custom because he used one. His vibrato and melodic solos and fills were out of this world! There will never be another like him. His impact on countless guitarist was profound, a friend of mine knew him well, said he was a great guy and loved to talk guitar with anyone.

Whitesnake 87 is the sickest rhythm guitar tone ever and it is a crime that Keith Olsen buried all the leads in reverb

That was great! I got to see John in Tygers, Lizzy and Whitesnake. Just a talent. That wide vibrato was such a trademark. You always knew you were watching someone special, I had that seeing both Cliff and Phil as well.
Love Bad Boys Live by the way. Often gets a blast in the car.

MSG Live at Budokan, great, great album.
Schenker is probably where Sykes got the wah as a filter from...tasteful wah use, not wacka-wacka on beat.

Thanks for sharing Michael!

I’m 58 and knew that Sykes was fully responsible for that Whitesnake record. I had been following him since Tigers of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy. Such an amazing player and found out later what an amazing singer as well, when I got the Blue Murder CD. RIP Mr Sykes.

That’s so cool you did that Bad Boy Live album. I have listened to that for years. It’s the only recording of Jelly Roll that I could find where he played electric and did the lead stuff at the end.

Thank you for this. I've listened to that 2004 album many times since I discovered it last week, and shared it with friends. It sounds amazing, and his playing was on point.

Mike, I watched your stuff and got a vibe. Now I know what that is after you talked about John. You Talked about John before in the same way. So now, I ask you donate your royalty payment from this video and the other to Johns Family. Making $ is cool on youtube. Don't get me wrong here because I support you always. Now is different. Do it for John and his family. Thanks for the spotlight. Dave

1:11:52 kind of reminds me of Marty Friedman the way he picks. I actually just noticed it a couple days ago.

I've been compiling an Excel spreadsheet with Nik Green's synth presets (Roland Super JX-10, Korg M1, Roland D-50) for the Blue Murder synth sounds. Something to compliment your Kemper profiles.

Sykes was definitely over 6' tall. I have a photo of myself with him at NAMM 2006 and he was at least 2" taller than me, and I was just under 6' at the time.
