How to wire a 2 way lighting circuit - In this video I show how to wire a light that can be turned on and off with two different switches. I use simple electrical diagrams to show how to do the wiring, I use diagrams to explain how the lighting works, and I provide a practical demonstration showing exactly how to connect the cables to the switches.

Great video. You kept it very simple to understand. Can you do a video on how to wire a 3 way switch controlling 1 light please

Thanks. Nice to see both a wiring diagram and then actually seeing it done physically - makes it easier to understand. When you did the downstairs switching (second switch) should the grey and black wire also have brown tape put on them as they can potentially become live ?

Using this method is great but the practicality of having to put 10 wires (more if you are looping out to another light) into a ceiling rose is difficult especially if you have 1.5mm wires and have to put additional sleaving on them to identify switched lives. Far better to have all the wires to go into a junction box above the lamp unit in whatever void you have . Then you only need the two wires and earth coming out of the junction box to the lamp unit. Not always possible if you are converting and have not access to put a junction box in but preferable if you can do it.

i have the 1 gang 2 way switches like in your video, and going to swap one switch for a dimmer switch, do you match the wiring in the same way as a normal switch?

Good video, I think some older houses use an additional single core cable, rather than a single 3 core cable.

I have this problem in an old house in the top and bottom of the stairs, do I need extra wiring to sort the problem out or can I get 2 way switches ?

What if its a 2gang on the hallway and on the landing opposed to a 1 gang? Meaning downstairs you've got a 2 gang switch 1 rocker controls hallway lights and the other rocker controls upstairs landing, and you've got the same upstairs. Do you just connect one side from the downstairs light and then take the 3 core cable upstairs and connect. Then use the other side for upstairs light and take 3 core cable downstairs and connect?

Hi, great video. I don't need a second switch anymore due to moving a stud wall, am I right in thinking I only need to remove wiring between the two switches? Thanks

My head hurts. Going back to college to learn electrics. Can’t wait! Was red and black last time I did it.

Do you have a video explaining 2 lights and 2 x 2 way switches. Staircase lighting.

Might be worth mentioning that while you are working on the 2 gang switch in the hall that you should isolate both the upstairs lights and the ground floor lights as there will be live wires to the hall circuit inside that switch.

Hi Mate, great video. If I wanted to replicate this exact scenario but with a junction box in place of the ceiling rose and then connected to a tube light in my case, would the same/similar steps apply?
