Republic CEO Graham Smith on BBC Daily Politics setting out why the monarchy is wrong for Britain and why it's time for change.

"I don’t think it’s an achievement to keep a job-for-life for life."

"I believe that the monarchy is wrong whether for pragmatic, political or principled reasons.”

"Republic has estimated that the total cost of the monarchy is around £334m every year.”

"It’s supposedly a constitutional monarchy but the royals DO have the power to push their own agenda."

"The Crown is the centrepiece of a deeply flawed political system, one which concentrates too much power in the hands of too few.”

"Isn't it time we embrace the democratic alternative and start electing our head of state?"

"Isn’t it time we started thinking about the future, about who is going to succeed the Queen, and how they will be chosen?"

“It’s easy to have staying power when you’re never challenged through the ballot box"

Why do so many people assume an elected head of state would come from politics? It could fall to anyone chosen by a majority of the people and who is ready to take on the role. A scientist, artist, philosopher, industrialist or even a sportsperson. With a monarchy we have absolutely no say in who represents us and this is all wrong in 21st century Britain.

I'm embarrassed as a Canadian that we give a shit about the queen. Looks like the other four presenters are trying to block Graham's speech

We, the British people should strive to create a meritocracy. Just because something has been the same way for over 1000 years doesn't mean that it's right. Public executions, forced child marriage and slavery are among other 'great' traditions that we did away with. It's about time we dealt with this one.

How the President would be in the Republic?
.
.
.
No much power as the queen is?
He couldn't dissolve the parliament?

If someone can answer me I will be thankful.

So well put by Graham Smith. Never heard so much childish drivel as the BBC coverage of the Jubilee.

Everyone is sentimental about the Queen, and rightly so, but once Charles is announced to be king, the abolishing of the Monarchy must go to a national referendum 🇬🇧

If the BBC is sponsored by the Crown, how can we expect them to support or express favourable views for a Republic. Indeed, how can we trust them to present this issue fairly and in a balanced manner, at all.

Plus, this was presented on the 50th Anniversary of the Queen's Coronation. I mean, could you have picked a worse time to be pushing for Republican Reform when everyone was going all ga-ga over her, anyway? Around five years later, I'm hoping the stats presented in this video have changed. Indeed, I have to wonder if they may have been skewed, anyway.

My Best. Out.

As a soldier i fight for the queen. The queen is a huge part go the uk. The uniform i wear is issued in the name of the queen. Do people just ignore the fact the prince harry and William went off to middle east to fight. They had no special luxuries they fought with normal men and women. The fact the prince William works as an air ambulance pilot and donates his wages back to the charity. The uk will always have a Monarchy even when Charles is king there will be no civil war and even if their is it will be really short. A couple of thousands people vs the Uk armed forces.

If this guy is willing to create a Republic why he doesn't go to all the default Republic's in southamerica and see the difference of third world resentment.

Wouldn't it be funny if there was a glitch in the computer system at Buckingham Palace and well known republicans on the do not invite list were invited to the next Royal wedding, funeral or jubilee instead of the other politicians and celebrities.
