Not only the risk of ignition/explosion, that gas can quickly displace all of the oxygen in that immediate area. Had 2 guys at my local gas company working on a simple residential service line, they had done hundreds of them. The conditions that day must have been just right. One fell unconscious, the other went to help him. Both were dead by the time we (FD) got there.

It’s not easy to keep your cool for the first few moments after the hit. The shock, noise, taste and smell combined is enough to scare the 💩 out of you.

That guy stopped, dropped, and rolled BEFORE the fire.

My co-worker hit a gas line at an Elementary school...
The school was evacuated, and a News helicopter soon appeared overhead...
Fire trucks arrived...it was a scene..!

And the utility companies always tell us to call before WE dig

Sooo loud. The video doesn't do the noise justice.

They sure didn't seem very deep to hit a main like like that.

Can't believe dude on backhoe didn't shut it down immediately and vacate. He was still operating it while other dude was trying to get as far away as he could. 😂

That was a high pressure line. Must have been a main line. Better hope they did their 811 call

I drove past an open gas line once. It was louder than a jet engine!

The last time I encountered such a phenomenal explosion of gas on the job, I was to blame. Late night chips, salsa, and beer might have been the culprits.

My partner and I were on our property, farm land, digging for his septic and he hit a large pipe in the ground. He shut it down, jumped off, and screamed-RUN! Not much later we found out it was an abandoned pipe. No lines in the area just as we thought. ScArY!

Bro saw his one chance to dive like an action hero, and took it.

As a utility locator this why we we exist. At the VERY least call 811 and get them out there but if you can find a local business that does it then that’s your best bet.

Sounds like a high pressure gas line . Hope the operators were fast on turning on the equipment.
