It’s tricky bc a child becomes the primary provider, parents are now on their payroll, but the child can’t make decisions independently and control the very resources they’re bringing in. It’s bound to create some resentment if not handle with intention and care.

I was auditioning for Disney commercials and met parents of child actors. If a child is serious about show biz or acting, one parent has to be a full time manager or assistant, not able to work or care for other kids. Child actor’s pay should give a fair pay to one parent and the running of a household. It can be spelt out according to how much to pay to hired helpers and adjusted to CPI and stress. If using 1099, the manager parent can show income and pays into SSI. Child actor has write off (expense). A qualified attorney can help draw up contracts. It helps to minimize misunderstanding and misgivings.

Cool story, especially since by the time Jaden Smith was 15, Keke had already been a legal adult for a couple of years. Yes, Will Smith did call her, but it had nothing to do with his son's *future* emancipation thoughts.
I mean...if Will could predict the future all the way back in 2010, I'm sure he would have made some different life choices. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I wonder why she wanted to be emancipated tho. Was it the money, were they bad people, was it just teenager/parent drama? I remember learning about emancipation as a teenager and wanting it so bad, not realizing how expensive that would have been and how unnecessary it was at the time for me personally. The problem is that no child should have to make their parents happy if their parents are taking their hard earned money. These kids grow up and have nothing to show for all the work they did. It's not a child's job to financially support their parents and stay living with them, if they're being taken advantage of. Some children are brought into this world to do whatever their parents want them to do. Some parents have already decided that their children will be in Hollywood, regardless of whether they are abused or not, as long as the money is rolling in. A lot of children grow up and are stuck working at a career that their parents choose for them, even if the child is miserable. A lot of parents want to live vicariously, and need to understand that these kids are humans too. Meanwhile, parents like that are clueless as to why their kids leave and stop speaking to them as soon as they get the chance.
