What is an Amoeba?

Have you ever observed microscopic Amobea in your biology lab?
If not “don't worry”.

In this video, we will learn about Amoeba

Amoeba is a genus that belongs to protozoa, which are unicellular eukaryote with membrane-bound cell organelles.

August Johann Rosel von Rosenhof was the first to discover Amoeba in 1757.

The name Amoeba is derived from the Greek word amoibe, which means change.

There are many species, of which the most extensively studied is Amoeba proteus.

Amoeba is found in terrestrial as well as aquatic habitats.

However, some are parasitic in nature, thereby causing harm to humans and animals.

For Example - Entamoeba histolytica that causes amoebiasis.

Lets learn about the structure of amoeba.
The cell of an amoeba consists of a cell membrane, a nucleus with genetic material, food vacuole for digestion of food, and a contractile vacuole for osmoregulation.

An Amoeba can have more than two nuclei in a cell. Similar to other protozoans, it reproduces asexually either by mitosis or cytokinesis.

During the forceful division of Amoeba, the portion that contains the nucleus survives, While the portions without nucleus die.

On the other hand, when Amoeba is exposed to the lethal environment, it turns into a dormant form, known as the Amoebic cyst.

It continues to remain in the cyst form until it encounters favorable environmental conditions.

Besides this Amoeba possesses pseudopodia for locomotion and feeding purposes.

The pseudopods are extensions of the cytoplasm.

Let’s move on to the nutrition in Amoeba.

Amoeba has a holozoic mode of nutrition.

The food sources of Amoeba are usually bacteria and other protists. While some are detritivores and eat dead organic material.

They ingest their food by phagocytosis, in which they spread their pseudopods around food particles and engulf it.

After ingestion, food is transferred to the food vacuole where it is digested by enzymes.

Digestion in amoeba is intracellular that is taking place within the cell.

After digestion food vacuoles are transported deeper into the cells by cytoplasmic movements and undigested waste is expelled out through the cell membrane.

This concludes our video on “Amoeba”.
