Guide to the Soviet Airborne Forces (part 1): Technical History

Within this video I hope to discuss how the heavier equipment of the Soviet airborne forces came to be, as a prelude to a second video which will cover the application of these systems and lighter elements. Hopefully, you learn something. If my voice sounds strained by the end of the video, that is because I recorded this all in one go.

Check out my Twitter; its where I post 90% of my informational content.

I apologize for my horrifying pronunciation of Volgograd. It's a fascinating error because the additional "o" that I tend to add when I get sucked into reading a script isn't present in the spelling. I believe that it has something to do with a subconscious augmentation of the name to avoid slurring my words when speaking quickly. I will work to remove this complication within part 2.

As a late cold war VDV reenactor this video is a godsend, you would not believe how hard it is to find decent english sources on this online. Thank you so so much!

really cool video. The VDV are featured as a faction in the psuedo-milsim game Squad, it would probably blow the algo up if you did a video rating the relative accuracy of the in-game implementation of their various vehicle assets.

Every time you say VDV, I get Warno ptsd from facing 76th and 35th 1v1.
Great video

I’m docking you points from the history section for not doing a brief segment on the pioneering role in Deep Airborne Operations the USSR played.

There is a disturbing lack of 1930s wingsliding Slavic supersoldiers leaping into the unknown from their TB-3s.

Difference between people who know what they are talking from those that don't normally starts with who is talking trash about something. You got NAFO loons on this topic of the cold war era VDV pretending to be experts and mixing it with current events and still not knowing anything even on that vs those who honestly look something and know what they are talking and being fair and praising what works and doesn't in context.
Thank you Misses K.

The algorithm recently led me to another video of yours, and I was absolutely shocked by the view count-- I expected it to be ten or a hundred times higher! High-quality content, perfect as either a light podcast or an in-depth reference and research piece. No notes, keep up the fantastic work!

From times of the Soviet Union there were higher excpectations on conscripts who about to join the VDV. But from times of USSR there is one simple system the decides everything in the result. When conscript is waiting in distribution center aka "holodil'nik" ("fridge" bc he is like a product to be picked up by someone) for officeres to arrive, it's the officers who decide which one of conscripts is about to join their unit\division\battalion etc. They are called "buyers", and, if they think that this is a good idea to choose hunchbacked man to join their glorious Gornaya Motostrelkovaya Diviziya - it's only up to their decision) Hovewer, every conscript (at least right now) has a right to say "no" for the first pick, if they think that this is really a bad idea to serve somewhere. But talking about times of VDV - yes, the expectations were high even from conscripts. But, you could have been chosen as "pisar" (or cancelars\offices as they were known back into times) or "captyor". These are unofficial proffesions, but they are just an examples of how could have your service turned up if you are smart, but not as good as the rest of your colleagues in service)
