Germany's Gloomy Economic Data

Germany's economy went from recession to flatlining; it's the only G-7 economy forecast to contract this year. With gloomy data, unfavorable demographics and increased industrial competition abroad, it's hard to see a catalyst for growth. Could Europe's engine become its new 'sick man'?

Germany backed every weak horse in the race.

It built a manufacturing sector based in imported Russian minerals and gas, to make outdated products it sold to China and the USA, while the EU remained politically stable.

Russian gas and minerals are now off the table and the price of alternatives make German products uncompetitive.

China and the USA are leading the manufacture of Electric Vehicles, both nations have the necessary raw materials that the EU lacks (lithium, raw earths etc) and neither nations have a war in the back garden.

To make matters far worse the rest of the world is looking on in askance as the right wing begins to grow in a nation that has a bad track record in that area.

The BMF should cut taxes, vat and so on to make Germany more competitive and help the poorer worker. Conumption taxes, like the VAT or USt as it known here, is a hurtful tax as it affects the poor and is a double taxation for waged persons than for business that can offset.

Making tax sustainable is the new German order.

The Germans have something that Southern Europe lacks. The will to resist, make reforms and create a prudent economic foundation. These characteristics should be the envy of the rest of Europe. It gives hope for the future and is needed as the world is changing.
