5 Broken PS5's - 13 PS5's Revisit - Can I Fix Them Now? Back in March 2021 I bought a lot of 13 broken PS5s and tried to fix them. I was able to fix some of the 13 but kept the ones I couldn't fix so I could try again later. So I've got 5 of those PS5s that I'm going to try (again) to fix. A number of them seem to have software issues so I'm hoping those can be fixed with the updates that have been released since then.

Credit to your honesty showing how difficult it can be as information builds slowly for new models. Hopefully you have space and a considerate partner who won’t mind you storing them until new knowledge or techniques become available. Keep up the great work 😀👍

For the frozen game consoles.
Try to install a game to an external usb drive. If it won't crash, the internal ssd is faulty. If it fails, the ram is faulty. Try non disc(digital) games first.

For the green screen shutdown, the vrm or the APU could be faulty. If the hdmi driver chip is faulty, the data communication between the tv and the console would broke or fail sometimes, and the tv would throw the data away if it has a lots of errors.

I was tempted to say faulty ram for the first couple, but after thinking about it, the PS5 mostly works fine and will crash only after loading a game, so I'd say the most likely culprit is a bad VRM phase or something is overheating, because it seems to only happen once the GPU ramps up.

It might have been interesting to try installing Horizon (PS4) to an external drive and run it directly off of that. If it doesn't freeze, it strengthens the assumption that the internal SSD is the culprit. I wonder if re-seating that internal SSD would do anything or if it's just faulty.

Ahhh bummer, such a shame, but like you said not every one is fixable. That said, the green screen of death is typically an overheating VRAM issue. I noticed it a couple of times while I've worked on them. It could make sense if the games are crashing that you have a bad ram module.

P.S if you want to sell the green screen one, I'd love to have a shot at it, or to try and fix it and send it back to you 😉

I think on the SSD what's married is the actual controller, you could swap memory chips out. You already have 3 unfixable PS5, nothing to loose and content to make.

For the first few consoles that freeze, have you tested to see if installing the games on a SSD in the m.2 slot would run the game? I feel like that might help identify if it's the soldered SSD.

Watching these videos makes me so glad my ps5 has had no issues. My friend sent it to me from overseas and I had to buy a normal power cord. Just cleaned it for the first time after 5-6 months, barely any dust. And it's so quiet. Hope these can be fixed and hope mine never gets the green screen 😁

I have a feeling it's a defective APU/CPU. You could try reflow the APU (one with liquid metal paste). Could be an internal storage, just a maybe. Normally most computers now days especially PS5 is not excluded loads game files to System RAM or GPU VRAM, if it was a faulty storage, it wouldn't allow you to download and install games especially PS5 firmware. I have also have a feeling one of the RAM/VRAM chip is faulty. Could be just the APU/CPU is faulty period.

Thanks for showing us not just the successes but also the failures. We get caught up all the time with looking at only the successes that we forget how important it is for us to fail so we know that there is plenty of room for growth and further research.

For Ps5 number 1: Maybe the issue is with the disk drive. U played Horizan and COD which are both disks and got stuck. But Astro's playroom ran fine. Maybe try another game digital only. There are many free games on PS Store, any can be used to test.

Edit: Thanks for the likes guys. Watch my channel too for gaming news and stuff.

I still like watching you fixing things even if you fix it until it's still broken. We're still in early days of the PS5, so hoping the code can be cracked at some point to bring these back to life.

Try installing onto a extended storage SSD and see if it will play from there, surely that will pretty much tell if it’s the onboard SSD.

I think these videos are good because they reflect how hard or impossible it is to repair tech sometimes, thereby raising awareness about the need for right to repair to take off.

The other 2 which just have game freeze, try getting a new ssd in the expansion slot since the firmware supports it now and try installing it there. I am no expert but could be a possible fix if the ps5’s ssd is the culprit.
