Why Do We Have Phobias?
Показать описание
Got one or two things that usually scares the crap out of you?
If yes, you're not alone — there's a good chance that everyone has something that frightens them.
It's however important to note that there are some people who tend to act irrationally when they come in contact with certain things and places. These are not fears but phobias.
In essence, there's a difference between fear and a phobia.
For the most part, a phobia is considered to be a form of anxiety disorder, and there's no consensus as to why some people display this kind of reaction to certain stimuli.
It's good to point out that most phobias can be associated with a particular situation or event that took place when we were just kids.
Some could be exaggerated forms of your normal fears; more like your natural fear of snakes, rats, spiders, dogs and more.
You should be aware that these natural fears are not out of one's control — they can either get better or worse depending on how our parents respond to them.
There's also a good chance that some phobias come as a result of learned behaviors — more like when children watch and imitate the way their parents react to the world.
For the most part, a child is likely to have an irrational fear when he or she sees a parent with the same phobia.
Essentially, children who have parental figures with anxiety troubles are likely to develop the same issues later on in life.
A negative or unfavorable experience is yet another factor that can cause a person to develop a phobia.
For example, someone may have an irrational fear for public speaking after having a very terrible of negative experience when speaking publicly.
What's more, a lady may develop androphobia (a morbid fear of men) after suffering a series of sexual and physical abuse in time past — the list goes on and on.
The good news?
Most phobias can be cured by appropriate treatment.
That said, it's in your best interest to seek professional help and of course, work towards letting go of your irrational fears. Good luck!
