Karnataka: Govt makes reading of Constitution's preamble compulsory in schools | BJP | Siddaramaiah

The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday decided to make it mandatory for all schools and colleges, whether government, aided or private, to read the Preamble of the Constitution daily. It has also made it compulsory to have a portrait of the Preamble of the Constitution put up at all government and semi-government offices in the state.

My dear fellow countrymen, please remember these words from Dr.Ambedkar's Constituent Assembly speech, when you read the preamble:

*Without equality, liberty would produce the supremacy of the few over the many. Equality without liberty would kill individual initiative. Without fraternity, liberty and equality could not become a natural course of things.*

This is the key to understanding the aspiration underlying our preamble for independent India. We have marched a great deal towards fulfilling this aspiration since our independence, and we still have a long way to go. It's my opinion that India, since independence, has achieved greater balance between liberty and equality, than what the US has over centuries. Our steadfastness on this path of maintaining balance between liberty and equality is constantly tested, particularly when fraternity fades. Liberty to pursue one's own interests (academic, professional, religious, sexual, etc.) has to be protected by law, but at the same time liberty has to be circumscribed by egalitarian principles of equality and justice (such as laws for enforcement of graded taxation, equitable representation in public service, uniform criminal laws, etc). Equality can be enforced by law, but not fraternity. It comes only by understanding one another and having empathy and compassion for our fellow citizens. We know that in spite of all our differences, our interests are best served when we are united by a sense of fraternity.
