Last time I checked was 30 seconds ago, and... yes they did have narrower keys;)
You measured a very late 19th century piano. Chopin long gone, Liszt in his late 60s.
1820s and 1830s are narrow enough that you play an octave different. And that's not even the big deal. The biggest deal is the weight necessary to produce a good sound. So much less!

The measurement is incorrect because you are not accounting for possibile differenti gaps between keys. Repeat measurent, measuring 2keys. Should be nearly 46. Subtract old measure and you Will get the true measurenyou wanted! 😊

What about measuring the length of the entire keyboard, and divide by the total number of keys?
That procedure would consider the gaps between keys .
