Killer performance man. I've been with guitargate for almost a year and cannot believe how much I learned. I have more than achieved all of my goals with your program. All to inspire emotions in people, as well as myself, and understand the tools to do so.

You know why this is his to date best video - Mike shows you how to be a performing musician not just a guitarist

As someone who plays live every week, it’s nice to see someone else do the things I’ve picked up. For example, not doubling guitar positions (which a lot of people do), watching the other musicians which is major to get the feel and breaks, and playing less. Someone once told me when playing live with a lot of people, you aren’t trying to make yourself sound better you’re trying to make the other people around you sound better. So sometimes playing less is way better than over playing and stepping over each other. If guitarist A is making guitarist B sound better and B and is making C sound better C turns around and makes A sound better which in turn, makes the bass and drums sound better which pushes the keys to sound better and it’s one giant continuous cycle of making each other sound better.

As a professional musician I have to say this is probably the best video I've seen in terms of breaking down what goes on during a live performance and the intricacies involved with sitting in
Great job !

It took lots of heart to get involved right from the start of the song; and a lot of heart to then post your self-critiques! I learned a lot, but now I just really want to jam with some friends.

OK….of all the videos i have watched on YouTube regarding music and guitar…THIS was the MOST one I don’t and haven’t played in a band - but do jams, open mics etc… and to have Michael tell the “story” / details/ breakdown - from his own persective was INCREDIBLE. Very different from a commentator talking about someone else. Thank you for sharing with us all. It would be fascinating to hear from Jake or other band members what they were thinking or how they approached having Michael join, both in advance in in the moment. Michael, I’d love to learn about how a band “typically” goes through the process of deciding on an arrangement, how much they practice (again, typically), how things grow and change over time….FANTASTIC !

Signal chain: prs594, prs mt15 lead channel, gain on 4, eq and presence all high noonish. Wampler faux reverb in effect loop at 2, tuner, vox original wah, ep booster. Pro Tip #2: Miller Light on cabinet brings out that extra mid-range high gain amps tend to loose.

Super stoked for you, Michael! I've seen Umphreys over a dozen times over the last ten years and always find myself thinking how intimidating it would be to sit in with them. Congrats on climbing that mountain and proving that your lessons are the real deal. Thanks for doing the work and showing us that this sort of thing is actually possible with hard work. Your guitar lessons have legitimately changed my life.

This is an insanely practical & personal experience you presented us here. I check your channel because I don't know how professional musicians play, NOR do I know how they talk about how they play. Your approach answers both. Love how you enjoy music by being right in the MIDDLE of it!

this is great insight on things that people just dont realize when playing live. Its great to see your commentary on how spontaneous and unplanned parts of your playing was and how you have to be unphased and ready to adapt. I love seeing this aspect and hope you post more of your own playing and how your thoughts and responses onstage affected your performance.

The most impressive part is the split-second decision making that you pull off seamlessly every time. I can’t emphasize how hard this is…even when someone says it’s easy (it’s not).

This is so cool bro! Really happy for you! This reaction / lesson format has been absolute gold for you, and I think you’re one of the only guys doing this. I love the high level, broad stroke approach to learning guitar along with the track. Your channel has helped me grow more in a year as a player than I have in the past 25 years of noodling around on the fretboard. FYI... if I see you at Outlaw festival, I won’t be that guy and bug you, but I’m at least buying you a beer for all of the awesome content over the past year!

I am not a musician but when I watched the video I wondered what you were thinking and how comfortable you were. Thanks for doing this I loved

Great insight by a working musician that those who play at home 99% of the time would never know about. I see a great deal of teamwork and adaptability at play. Thanks for the great video and commentary.

One of the best music-related videos I've come across! So many things about how to play with different artists, and so little ego to taint it. What a service!

Honestly that "mistake" sounded great. I'm always a fan of breaking out of the usual pentatonics.

You’re an awesome guitarists and seem like a really cool guy. My wife thinks you’re handsome but doesn’t know crap about guitar, so you’ve gone over well in this household for two very different reasons. Keep up the great playing. Great channel.

Brilliant performance and analysis! Your finer points of what is happening is what makes me love your channel. It is obvious you love what you do, and you just make me a better guitar player.

Yessir! It's all about staying out of the way while adding your own touch, and you did so extremely well! Had to be such a cool experience, and as I said before, completely and totally well deserved. Bravo!
